internal engine cleaning

Hi All,

I have a 1990 chevy pick-up with a 5.7 liter engine. I had to replace the intake manifold gaskets because of a leak. I pull off the intake, and this poor old truck engine is full of sludge (just got the truck). It has 170,000 miles on it and runs good. Doesn't burn oil, or even leak any. I really need to clean this out, my question is how? I don't want to pull the motor, or even take it apart any more than I have to. Does anyone have any "safe" ideas of how I can clean this thing out?

Do you think you can use a wet dry vaccum ?

I did something kinda of weird once.

1. Stiff the intake holes with rags.
2. Dropped the oil pan
3. poured disesl all over the engine
4. the fuel will drain out of the bottom of the block.

Let dry.. It was a little hard to start but once it started run like a rat with a fire cracker in its a$$

I have heard of people who clean stuff with disesl gas all the time.

DO NOT USE NORMAL GAS.. BOOM!!!
COVER UP ALL OF YOUR SKIN AND WEAR SOMETHING HEAVY DUTY FOR BREATHING.

I would just try some of the motor flush stuff. I've also heard of people using Kerosen. Then stick with one brand of oil. If I'm not mistaken, sludge is caused by mixing different makes of oil (prafin-wax base and petrolium base). If you have 170k on it now and it runs good, I'd say dont try anything drastic and just start taking better care of it now.

i wouldn't do anything, if u use a flush to loosen it up and it can get in the pan and can clog the pickup for the pump, i would carefully clean out what i could, put it back together and run it for a few minutes and then change out the oil and filter, with 150k you might end up causing more harm than good trying to clean it out, if it runs good leave it alone

This method actually works great. Diesel fuel oil is a excellent solvent. Only thing that would work better is JP4 military grade jet fuel. I drain my oil , put back drain plug, pour 1 quart of diesel, run engine for no more than 3-5 seconds. then drain again, take off old filter.And diesel residue will not break down new oil viscosity like gasoline would.Because of it's low API gravity and high flashpoint.
