I'm in the process (literaly) of changing my trans oil filter and in order to do that I had to drop the valve body, anyways, after I dropped the valve body down two big ass springs fell on the ground!??!? One of them is big and the other is little(er). Both are about 2 inches long or so -- where do they go???!! As I'm looking at the trans from below (with valve body out, it looks as if there is a larger hole that the big spring fits it about half way, then there is (3) smaller holes, all of which the smaller spring fits in about half way too? What have I done!?!?! :bloated:

I think you'd better find a factory service manual to look at.

The only other thing I can suggest is to give level10 or some other knowledgable tranny place a call and hopefully they'll be kind enough to look it up for you.
Maybe the place you bought the replacement filter from might help out if they have the info?

Well, I went to the dealer (only 1 in Tulsa) and I bitched until they let me go in the back and talk to a mechanic -- more specifically one who knows tranny's. Well, the mechanic was very nice and he let me browse through the books and it turns out that the small spring sits inside the larger one! Go figure :D
Either way, I sped all the way home and finished installing the springs and the valve body and filter and replaced the oil with Mobil1 ATF and now it shifts much nicer than before - no hurky-jurky 1-2 shift - yippee!
I'm happy now .. :sun:

Well done! You are the second person I know of on this forum who has changed this filter and solved their shift problem. The info you provided will help others. How much did the parts cost and where did you get them?

Filter kit (new gasket and filter) -- $16.00 -- Pepboys
Mobil1 ATF -- 6 x $5.49/qt -- Pepboys
Anybody attempting this will have to drop the valve body in order to take out one of the bolts holding the filter in place. It would be real helpful if you have access to an air compressor and a 1/4" air ratchet with a 10mm deep socket. There are 5 or so bolts holding a plastic panel to the underside (removal not necessary, but helpful). There are several (like 20) holding the pan on, then there are another 15 or so holding the valve body in place. Oh, and, by the way, the whole filter change process is more time consuming that actually difficult.
Anyways, it was a pretty inexpensive fix (under 50 bucks) considering the amount of good it did the trans. I believe the fresh new oil helped tremendously, too.
