Anyone out there tell me how to replace a fuel filter on a 02 silverado. I did not want to pay the dealer 80 bucks to do something I could do for the price of the filter if I had a general idea how to do it.. Thanks.

The fuel filter is located on the inside of the passenger side frame rail under the passenger door. There will be a bracket bolted to the frame holding the filter in place , i found it easier to remove the nuts from this bracket. Then make sure the area around the filter is clean , no loose dirt. Remove the fule lines being careful where you do this because there will be some fuel sipllage caused from drainage out of the lines. Then just reverse the procedure to replace it.

I replaced mine last week on my truck, 2002 Silverado ExCab 4.8l and it was on the driver side.

So should i worry about de-pressurizing the fuel system?
Thanks..
Thanks..

I didnt depresurize when I did mine. Just dont be under the filter when you break the lines loose and do it slow. Some fuel will spray/leak out but it will depleat rather quickly. When you start the truck back up again it may stumble a little but it will smooth out and run normal.

All you do is find the thing, tin can lookin thing, and just loosen the nuts on both sides. DO NOT depressure the line, i have never even heard of doin such a thing. then just put the new one in place and tighten both the nuts.

Yes, that is true...you do not need to depressurize the duel lines to remove the fuel filter....even the mechanic never do, and neither do the stealerships....on 1999 to 2004 models the fuel filter should be on the passenger side under the door on the frame body....2005 models have the filter inside the tank....so you don't need to change it....(or you can change the tank, ever 10,20,30,000 kilometers and have a new filter that way...hehe...)....good luck.....ps. never heard of the filter on the driver's side....

I guess my truck, walbern1's truck and the Hanes manual are the exception. And I guess all the other Silverado's that have the filler neck and tank on the driver side are an exception. Silveradoking, was your truck made in another country? So point being, if the fuel lines are inside the rail which ever side you want to call it, the small can attached to them is the fuel filter. :screwy:
Have fun figuring it out...

Maybe its a difference between canadian and american made silvys....I know for a fact that my fuel filter is on the driver's side.....i have changed it plenty.......i think the most logical way to find it would be to look on the side that you put gas in.......either way, just look for a small metal canister with a line running into and out of it......and keep a towel between the filter and the frame to soak up whatever gas does come out......

Mine was made in kentucky...same place as y'alls. i ain't de-pressurized anything, just broke the nuts loose and let it drain. After replacing it turned the key on to the "run" position a few times to let the pump fill the filter and re-pressurize the system. Mine never missed a beat.
FYI: There is a rubber o-ring on the end of either fuel line...be sure they are in place before you put the filter on or you will have a leak and loose power..and fuel of course..

That's funny...I don't no where my truck isi made, but my fliter is on the passenger side....and I fill my tank on the driver's side (this would be very stupid if someone had to fill their tank on the passenger side....) Anyone Canadian's have their filter on the passenger side? I don't think they make Silverado's in Canada...I know they make it in America and in Mexico, but not Canada.....I think.....

So where do the fuel lines cross from the driver side to the passenger side? My filler is on the driver, the tank is on the driver, the fuel lines on the driver and the filter is on the driver side. Mine is a 1500 ext cab 5.3. What is the make that has the passenger side filter?

open drivers door look at the outer edge of the door, the place where the latch mechanism is, at about eye level you should see a label that says made in usa by uaw and what plant. as far as depresurizing the lines if you have throttle body you don't need to it depressurizes the lines when you shut truck off. only the type with real fuel injection needs to be releaved but for a fuel filter its not worth it.

Maybe there's something that I'm missing......like jethro 3 said: if the filler is on the driver's side where would the lines cross to the passenger side?.......now i'm kinda curious...as far as assembly...my truck was "created" (LOL) at the Pontiac East Assembly Plant in Pontiac, Michigan.....I have a 5.3 Z71 ECSB...with filter on the driver's side...

So who has a passenger filter and where does it cross over? Picture of the crossover if possible would make me believe..

For those of you who asked how to depressurize the system (although it isn't nescessary for the 9-13PSI TBI systems), just pull the fuel pump fuse and start it. It will die in a couple of seconds.

Did any of you use a flare nut wrench? I'm no body builder but I'm no wuss either. I just cant get that stinkin fuel line to budge.

I just used regular wrenches. I think one was a 20mm, not sure about the other, maybe a 16.

They started putting the filter in the tanks in either '03 or '04 (stupid, stupid, stupid!!!), BTW... Also, I've heard that if you just open your filler cap it lowers the pressure of fuel in the lines so it won't spray as much... Never got a chance to try this though, since I discovered when I went to change my filter that it is now inside the tank.

I replaced my filter on my dads 99 silverado. Depressurizing the fuel system is as easy as removing the filler cap. It was on the drivers side as well.

So I tried using a breaker bar and a flare nut wrench on the bolts either side of the fuel filter. I got one to budge but the other wont move and now i've pretty much stripped the thing. Anyone know much about replacing fuel lines?

I did mine in the parking lot of the dealership! After they told me how much they wanted to charge for labor, I walked to the part counter, paid 30 something dollars for the filter, and headed for the parking lot behind the service shop. It was easy, I drove the drivers side up on a curb, crawled under the truck, and loosened the inlet and outlet of the filter. A small amount of fuel was spilled, most from the filter when I turned it upside down to see what was in it(ouch on the eyes) No depressurizing is necessary. Just make sure you install the new filter the right way. There is an inlet and an outlet. BTW, I have an '03 and the filter was on the drivers side. Then, I gave the old filter to a service rep, and asked him to put it in the hazmat bin. He looked puzzled for a second, but I just walked away and did a nice harry burn-out leaving the lot. (ok, so the burn-out was a lie, but I know my silvy could do it!) Well, good luck anyways!!
