Oil Capacity

I haven't changed the oil in my truck by myself in a while (mainly due to lack of resources and disposal places) but now that I have the option, I was wondering what the oil capacity was of the engine. I checked the owners manual in the truck and it said 1.6 quarts. Is this right??? It seems rather low. I have a 2002 Pre-runner with the 2.7L engine.

According to my 2004 manual the 3RZ-FE engine requires 5.4 quarts with filter change and 4.7 quarts without filter change. In the real world those figures will vary depending on how much oil remains in the engine after draining. I would put four quarts in and check the level. It will probably be low, so add a little oil and check again and continue the process until the dipstick indicates full.
It takes a little time but prevents over filling and insures you have a full crankcase when your engine is started. After the engine is started and turned off check the oil level again after 30 minutes or so. I always precharge my filters with some oil prior to installing. That helps get oil pressure up quicker when the engine is started after an oil change.
