Why do people hate on GST's?

Everyone is always hating on the fact that i own a gst, they tell me theres no point in modding a FWD car. I cant stand it, i know the all wheel drive is better, but not a huge amount better. I know for a fact that a gst with proper suspension and weight tuning can run within a sec of an AWD. What do you guy think? Im actually building my gst just to spite all the AWD drivers that always are hating, cars have been functioning just fine on two wheels a lot longer than on four.

Dude, I totally agree with you. I have a Talon TSi FWD, big deal if it aint AWD. AWD is for people who can't drive (jks!)
But yeah, it would be cool to have AWD, but hey FWD is just that much more of a challange in my opinion :-)

yeah, i've had both a GST and GSX... and ppl do think its a waste to mod a gst, but having owned both... i think both cars are a blast to drive... but i do like the launch on the GSX more  there's nothing like reving the car up to 5k, dumping the clutch and having NO wheel hop (like a FWD)......ohh yeah and the GSX is way better in the snow.... good luck guys..

All my "friends" say my car has GWD Gay-Wheel-Drive. Bunch of fags that have trucks, God I hate living in montana. Around here you have hicks, not so hicks, "gangbangers"wannabe's, and ricer's. Nothing like seeing lambo doors on a 87 accord.

you live in montana, whereabouts? I am in alberta. And yeah, it is full of ricers!!!
I totally do wish I had an AWD, if for nothing else (as joemathews said) for traction issues. I live in canada and sometimes ice can be wicked gay. Plus I do agree with the launch.
I agree that I would rather have the awd, but fwd is not too bad i guess, it can be fun and a challange

Ppl hating on GS-T's ??? :screwy:
Fact: Most ppl hate because they are jelous! :icon16:
Also do the ppl who say this have AWD or RWD cars. If they do, then the are only saying that because they own those kinds of cars. If they dont then just tell them to STFU!

well there are pros and cons to both cars. FWD-less weight , less traction, less crap to break.
AWD- more weight, great traction, but when something breaks thats more $$. I wanted a AWD but couldnt find any. I was going to just hold out for a AWD but then i found my gst for only $1000. Iv put may $5k-$6k( that includes a whole new moto) and im very very happy with this FWD. But if you put the LSD in the front and a good suspension and some slicks on the front and the FWD's can launch pretty fu****g hard. But Im going to get me a GSX after I graduate college.

Anyway, they have never liked me cause when we had huge meets here I would hang out with the guys with Eclipses, Supras... in other words, way nicer cars than they have. So now that I have a GST they hate me that much more.
If they are so jealous, then maybe they should have bought a nicer car than some POS.

moding a GST isn't stuipid unless you are going for track times etc. if you are like me and aren't that serious, and just want a nice looking, nice sounding fast car then a GST is perfect. Slap on a nice intake and exhaust and i'm really fine. my point of getting a turbo dsm is getting a car that can SMOKE all those ricers around here with 3' spoilers. and do it stock

12-22-2004, 01:18 PM
I'm still thinking about selling the car. I am going to start to put it back together in january. It will have a stock motor, tranny, and perhaps a 14b. It will be mostly stock, not sure about exhaust yet (it's either put the stocker back on, or make the 3" quieter) or ECU. At any rate it will go cheap, 6-7 grand. There is a thread with more info.
Oddly enough, I have considered a GST for a daily driver. But the thought of getting an EVO8 won't get out of my head. ;)

I was going to get a gst at first but i couldnt pass up the awd. I had a choice but I agree the awd is better for track times and in the rain/snow. I raced a tsi a while back and they really arent that much faster stock basicly but after the 350-500 mark a gsx would be much better.

I love my GST cause u can really feel the pull when u drive it fast.. its different then my sis 04 corolla S even though her's is a FWD too, i cant feel the pull in her car. Even though some of my friends tease me about not having a GSX i would tease them too about having a civic,mr2(non turbo),integra ls. If u dont own a dsm eclipse.. u dont know how it feels like having a gst from a gsx, so dont say shit when u dont know shit.

well, obviously I'm not goin for track times cause I have FWD...hehe. Its nice to drive around daily, with the occasional race under the right conditions (safe from death and cops). DSM's are a joy to own and mod even though they arent the most reliable things ever created. In a way the "haters" are right - modding the hell out of a FWD car at some point really gets to be expensive for the results in the 1/4 mile. stock, ive beaten a AWD 2G with intake, catback, and intercooler pipes on the freeway from 60mph and on a pull from 40mph or so by 2 lengths or so and 1 1/2 length respectively. The faster you go, the more drivetrain loss is obvious to be expected by AWD(i know you AWD guys dont wanna admit to it). 4 wheels spinning = more loss in power than 2 wheels spinning. But as far as friction goes - from a stop with the AWD...it just got fugly. But in both the twisties and the drag, RWD is the best IMO, which is where I'm goin after I get a nice job out of college...but I'll always keep a DSM in my garage.
kjewer1
12-23-2004, 09:14 AM
Actually the drivetrain loss percentage drops as power goes up. People have checked on a 4 wheel dyno, and there is much less loss with the RWD system engaged than without it than people think. ;) I'll have to look for the numbers, but its around 5% if I remember correctly. I can duplicate this experiement as well and see for myself, since I have a welded center diff. The only problem is that the people that always try to do this test are making too much power, and can't get traction on the dyno with only FWD (AWD dynos are different than 2WD dynos in this regard. The same cars do get enough traction on 2WD dynos obviously). I can put a different WG spring in so I can get below ~450 whp and gives this a shot again in the spring. I need a hundred bucks for the dyno time, anyone want to start making donations? Its for a good cause :D

you know, sometimes car doesnt have to be the fastest around, just fast enough. Thats why I traded in the 2.4 Spyder for a turbo one. Some people have this idea that if its not the fastest thing on the road, its not any good. The marginal gains in turning a car into a rocket arent much if your not planning to race on the track, like me. So a turbo spyder with some basic mods is good enough for street.

The problem lies with the driver, more than the car. The driver's low self esteem comes out, so an attitude like "If my car's not the fastest I'm not good enough" appears. It should be called Driving Esteem.

it cracks me up when i get the whole FWD thing. my car is fast as fuck [relative], and on the freeway i'm a monster. i can hit the speedlimiter HARD under heavy accleration. i can launch pretty consistantly. my biggest problem is wheelspin at high RPM [1st and 2nd]. my wheel hop is 99% gone, i can actually do nice burnouts now.
little thoughts:
GSX launch as high as possible :)
GST launch no greater than ~3300
GSX no speed limiter
GST be brave and start toying with the ECU
GSX big fat turbo's that put diesel trucks to shame
GST at least the biggest turbos you should use won't lag as much as them [hey, at least there is something to say]
GSX no spyder
GST Spyder can bolt on the GSX tranny back :)
GSX drivetrain loss, but when you DS to 4th on the freeway and your 20g hits full boost....
GST no drivetrain loss, but we all know that 20psi on an EVO 16g aint the same as 20psi on a tdo6h...
GSX great in snow
GST spins in the rain, fuck the snow!
GSX extra diff to buy
GST only one and what a difference it makes!
just to name a few :)

I really do agree with Shpyder's point of view cause its really realistic. And not to argue, but Kevin, I meant the ehh...actual speed like 50mph, 60mph, 70mph, etc. Not the power that the car is making. Both have their advantanges, but AWD has a few more IMO. But all DSM's are fun to have and drive...and I think AWD vs. FWD has been argued too much to come to a conclusion. To each his own.

the fact of the matter is of course i'd love to have an AWD. But then reality sets in. the last time a turbo AWD DSM was made was 6 years ago. And around here they are impossible to find unless you want to travel a LONG ways.
so basicly i'd rater be driving a Turbo fwd DSM, than not driving a turbo dsm at all. i'm not modding the hell out of the car, i'm not racing, i'm not going to the tracks. i just want a sweet looking car that's fast enough to back it up

Actually I'd love to own an AWD, I really would. I live in NY, so the traction would be wonderful. Driving home from work about a week ago, there was maybe 1/4 of an inch of snow on the roads and I went around a very gentle turn at 5mph in my FWD and the thing slid right off the road. A very considerate person in an AWD car (Subaru if you must know) went around the turn at about 30 and didn't go anywhere. Fortunately they came back and let me use their phone to call someone to get my car out of the ditch. :headshake Biggest bummer in the world to remember that it's a FWD.
All in all though, I think both have their advantages, so it's for personal taste. Well, taste and location. If you live in a snowy area, try to find an AWD or take lesson from me and remember to always bring a cell phone and have a towing company's number handy

Getting slightly off the topic, having a RWD car today isn't bad. A couple years ago I got my first car, a 1972 Pontiac LeMans. It was basically a weaker version of the Pontiac GTO. RWD, massive amount of torque and I think about 300hp. My uncle and I took it out on a highway and got it up to 120 in about 15 seconds (I don't really know how long but it was about that) Well, lets just say driving that bad boy in the snow was NOT fun. The car was all over the place and slid off the road...In my neighborhood. So that's when my parents gave it to some kind of charity for a tax-reduction thing, and they bought me my beloved Eclipse. So on a closing note: AWD beats FWD in the snow, FWD is better than RWD in the snow, but RWD beats NWD (No Wheel Drive)
