97 duratec-camshaft position sensor

I received a bad code...camshaft position sensor malfunction...and replaced the part. i am still receiving thr p0340 error code. Upon further inspection i noticed a prob in the unit housing...what appears to be a "melted" metal mass present. It looks like it used to be a half-circle piece that meshes w/the sensor. Am i looking at more trouble or an easy fix? do i need to replace the entire unit?
