Marlboro Red

I'm about to start a conversion project in the new year, making a Ford Sierra Grp A rally car from Tamiya's Sierra RS500 kit. I will be purchasing the Reji conversion kit soon to build a replica of Sainz's Marlboro sponsored Sierra.

From the link below, can anyone tell me which colour should be used to replicate the Marlboro red, preferably a Tamiya TS colour. Thanks.

In theory I'd agree. However, to look right you'll have to match the chevrons on the decal sheet which from memory are printed quite a dark red.

I wonder if every decal printer has the correct materials to print flourescent...and you would also have to trust they knew the correct color to begin with.

So I would go with what I percieved to be correct and that would be TS 36 for me.

Just pulled the Reji decal sheet out and the red is arround TS-8 Italian red, way too dark. Since there are only 5 chevrons, best course of action might be to paint them something brighter like TS-36 too.

The debate over Marlboro reds and Ferrari reds will go on til we die! LOL!

Or maybe try TS-49 bright Red. :rolleyes:
I think Marlboro Red is TS-8 Italian Red, as Ferrari (Racing) Red is TS-49 Bright Red if you prefer Tamiya. But I do found that some of the Sierra with Marlboro livery do have TS-36 flourescent red. But on the your pict, I see TS-49 bright red as closest. :2cents:

Hmm, this is trickier than i thought it would be. TS-36 and TS-49 do sound like they will match the colour closely. I also found a pic of the decal sheet (i think it is anyway) which may help you choose:

If I have to match that decal in the pict, I will use Gunze #79 Shine Red. Shine Red is more orange than TS-49 Bright red. :2cents:

Know of any shops that would send this to the UK, or am i better off with Tamiya paints?

as far that I can see from your decal, the best match would be:

(real color is like the red on the back of the car. there is a lot of reflection from the white background) that would be damn close. it's just a litle bit bighter than Tamiya TS8

I would say the best bet and my choice would be to paint the chevrons and not use the red decals. I have seen this debate on the F1 sites and some people use Finishers MP4 red, some use TS 49 with TS 36 sprayed over top, and some people have there own mix. Me personally would find a good red and spray all the red and the chevrons.

My 1:43 550 (see the Le Mans grid thread) is a match for the real thing... I've been lucky enough to get right next to it in the flesh and it's a mix of 75% TS-36 to 25% TS-49 shot over gloss white. The Marlboro McLarens were slightly more orange, but TS-36 over gloss white is very close IMHO. You have to remember that photographs dull down and loose flourescent finished. The first time I got up close to a McLaren I was quite shocked at just how bright they are... never seen a photo do them justice!

As for Ferrari colours, you could write a book on it. Surfices to say the older the car the deeper the red. 50's cars a more maroon than red, up to todays F1 cars which are actually brighter the TS-49 (see my mix above).

I'm lucky in that I get to go to many motorsports events and get up close to the cars (especially at Goodwood), I don't think it's ever possible to match colours from photographs, there are so many steps in the process where the colors can get changed.

At the end of the day go with what you are happy with, your model is unlikelly to sit next to the real thing, so as long as it's close and looks right it'll do the job ;-)

why not choose a red you like, then instead of using the decals for the marlboro shape paint it. mask the shape and paint it then you'll have no problems with colour matching.

I think that is what i will do, using TS-36 because that seems to match the red well. I will have to wait until i get the decals until i decide though, but i have a bad feeling that mediamix will sell out of them soon.
