WTF, why are B18c engines so high?

I was just wondering because i was looking at engines for my civic, and i originally was going to get a B16a, then realized i had the cash to get a B18c. The question i have is, why are the B18c engines soo high, in comparison to B16's, are they really that much better? Cause i'm wondering if i should get a B16a and save some money, or go ahead and get a B18c, i mean are they really worth the extra money?

the b18c has a bit more torque to get it up and moving from a lower rpm... i have a b18 and i am gald i got it, but i also have not ridden in a similar civic with a b16a swap so i dont have a direct comparison to offer you

and for that reason they are in higher demand, hence a higher price.

My next question is are they really worth the extra money? (considering in the long run, with mods, turbo) Would i really notice a difference between the b16a and b18c in my civic hatch?

im in the same boat as you, i have a 91 crx that already has a b18a1 swap, but i want something w/ more power and that is more reliable. i checked out the price difference in a gsr swap and a b16 swap installed and found that its about a 2,000 difference!!! i think if u were considering a turbo in the future i would go w/ a gsr, because they are newer motors and have been known to be strong.

I got a B16B for $4,000. Think the power is worth it? I don't.. but everybody wants one. Business 101, higher demand = somebody will charge you more for it.

Both are decent motors.
personally I like the feeling of having "torque" I know it isnt much but b18's you can feel a difference over a b16 and what not.
In the long run im sure you would be happier with the b18c1 its a good strong motor does well in boosted applications with a different IM and just sound sweet they have that GSR whistle as I like to call it.
I have seen hatch's and crx's go fast with both b16's b18c's and b18a/b's it's all in what you want and what you can afford.

Civichbsi91,
I noticed you run a 14.3 with your rex. What kind of setup do you have? I want to eventually build a mid-14 sec crx, and I'm trying to decide, regarding costs and reliability, whether to go with a built d16z6 or a b16 (obviously with fewer mods).

I have a LS with ebay short ram and a thermal cat back. with only those two mods I have run 14.7 @ 93 mph it could got 14.5-14.6 with some better tires and the broken motor mount fixed.
I went 14.3 @ 99 on a 50 shot yes I know the time didnt go down very much but I wasent used to nitrous fully yet and had some trouble spinning in first and second. but if you look at the mph it would easily put down a high 13 as is...well with the motor mount and better tires.
All in all I have spent 2,300$ including the car.

Damn, that's impressive. I almost spent $2600 on a '91 HF the other day-glad I decided to hold off. Where'd you get the LS?

i just bought a B18C type R engine and swapped it into a 97 civic hatchback. i have no regrets over the power and reliability. But once again, it really depends on what ur trying to go for. a Type R engine is good for an all motor but not for turbos cuz the engine already has a high compression. A GSR engine on the other hand is for the force induction enthusiast. If u plan to turbo or supercharge ur car someday or u just want the extra power then i suggest going for GSR engines since they can handle more boost and compression. U have to ask urself... "what do i really want to do in the future with my car?" from there figure out ur pros and cons and ur price range. that should set u in the best direction. That's what i did and decided in a N/A setup. less maintenance, longer car life, cheaper and did i say cheaper? Hope that helps.

I agree with reliability, but cheaper? Comparing an NA setup to a boosted setup of equal power, the NA is almost always going to be more expensive. It's more difficult to squeeze hp out of an engine with bolt-ons and high compression than it is with forced induction. That's why an engine like the F20C is so amazing; 120 reliable hp from one naturally aspirated liter requires some serious mechanical know-how. Take a D16z6, for example. To get 200 hp out of this engine naturally aspirated is going to take MUCH more time and money than simply reinforcing the bottom end and adding a turbo, not to mention the fact that many extreme NA builds with high compression and increased rev limits are generally not as streetable boosted engine with the same amount of hp. Don't get me wrong; I'm an NA fan, but if your looking for big numbers, a turbo is a much more simple and cost-effective option.

I personally don't think that there is much difference in the B16 and B18. There might be a little more torque and a little more power in stock mode. But with modifications, you won't find much of a difference. I personally don't think it's worth it, but I live in Japan and can get a B18 GSR for about $300 and a B16 for next to nothing. We boost them till they blow up, buy a new one for a gumball, 3 chopsticks, 2 left socks, and call it a day

Wow. You are one lucky bastard. Over here, $300 would get you a D16A6 if you found one for a good price.

It's just wierd how everyone is so Honda crazy over there. Tell you the truth, no one really even drags Hondas on the streets over here. That's why I wanted to get my Civic (EG) going, so that I can represent. I have a 1998 MR2 turbo, and had a TD-06S in it, but I blew that thing up. I hated draggin that car. It seemed like I blew a mission every damn weekend. Instead of trying to put a T78 in it, I decided to buy my EG ($1000). Plus, I can get engines for my EG for cheap since nobody really does anything with them (junkyard). We have a lot of fun on the streets, but GT-Rs still rule the streets. Try beating a 1200hp GT-R. Get all 4 of them wheels spinnin' and it just seems that it launches like a rocket. The only chance you have is if you have a rolling start. Not many people are even racing the Lancers, Imprezzas, or Pulsar GT-IRs. I would think more people would race them since they are 4WD, but I guess if you want a 4WD, you could just buy a GT-R since they start at only $3,000. :screwy:

I agree with one thing in life....You get what you pay for....If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. I beleive that the AEM is better, but it just depends on personal opinion if it's worth it or not. In the big picture, will it make a difference? Who knows. If a person is going for mild mods, then I would definitely go for the AEM, but if you are going all out, who knows. I don't know how much of a difference it would make.

See today all you are paying for is the name...not the R&D not the power increase the name...because every company that could copy that design and put a high peformance filter on it has and thats why no name intakes are so cheap.
If I want a cold air ill get some cheap pipe route it down in the fender well and have a cold air but im not too worried about it at this point. I like the throttle response of the short ram and the price.

I agree with more expensive isn't always better. It's just commercialism. People see the top drivers using a product, so it must be the best, right? It's like saying that Nike was the best basketball shoe because MJ wore them. Trust me, I'm always about the bargain. Go with what you like, so when you are the top dragger in the U.S., everyone will be using what you use...

Yes..and No.. I started out with a 1998 MR2 turbo. I put a ass load of money into that and it broke every other week. That car had terrible mission problems. I could be in the middle of a gear, stomp the gas, and I would have a gear shooting our of the casing. Then I went into dress up, and bought a Toyota Majesta. I put an ass load of money into that fixing it up ($80K). And finally, I have my Civic (EG). The reason that I bought the EG is because #1...it was $1,000. I saw Import Tuner and a bunch of other mags, and saw what everyone in the states were doing with Hondas. Over in Japan, nobody really fixes up Hondas, so everything here is very cheap (low demand). I don't necessarily drive a bargain car, but then again, I won't buy something just because HKS, Trust, or any other company stamps a symbol on them. An expensive price tag doesn't always mean quality, just as a cheap price tag doesn't always mean crap. You can slap a $5,000 paint job on a piece of crap, but in the end you still have a piece of crap.
