Hint Hint Luke!!!
Well after long debate, conversating with lotsa people at different locations, i have come to one conclusion!!! screw the add on turbo, I gotta get the SR20DET....Anyone got some pointers??? My mechanic said that he will give me all the info i need, but i wanna hear different opinions on doing certain things that i might need doing, whether it be re-mapping, up-grading from stock downpipe, what sized piping is sufficient, to specifications that i might need... So Please :help: anyone and everyone, the project starts in 3 1/2 weeks, so :help: My mechanic said he will take care of everything, but i wanna be educated as much as i can in this field so i will know everyting that is going on from 1st base to homevrrooommm... Gotta start the crammin'

Well, I'd suggest reading the SE-R Mailing List archives and reading through the SR20DE Forum. There are a lot of issues involved. You will need to add ballast resistors to the injector harness leads. You will have to fabricate a downpipe (that should be the easiest part of this project).

You will want to get a remapped B14 ECU and wiring harness.

I know there are other issues, but I am not as familiar with the GTi-R engine. There are a lot of folks on the SE-R Mailing List and the SR20DE Forum that have a lot of knowledge of this swap.

FWIW, IMHO your money is better spent on a Bluebird DET. For equal dollars spent, the BB DET will be more powerful and it uses many of the same parts as the USM DE. The GTi-R engine doesn't use anything in common with the USM DE.

Total Confusion,SR20DET Dang it!!!
Does'nt gti-r det have forged pistons and rods, compaired to the cast iron p/o?
Also have stronger main cap bolts
And i thoght that the gti-r was an over all stronger engine?? Confused now, i think it's gonna be another long while before i start my project once again :(

Also, I went to S-er. net, i cannot find anything about engine swaps - 1 article about s20det swap and it does not say much at all, where else could i go to find info, or is there a place i'm missing on the site???

What are you power output goals. That would be the first question right after you set yourself a budget.

Anyway George wrote an excellent article about swaping a SR20DET into a G20 (p10). Most of that should be applicable to the 1999 P11 with some minor differences like the ECU as he already mentioned. I'd suggest you get your hands on a December (?) 2001 copy of Sport Compact Car.

Hoping of an output at about 300+.... I actually have that issue!!! lol, it's the one with the red g20 in that back of the issue huh? something about hybrid or something like that right?

Yep. That's my car. :D

You can hit 250 hp without spending a lot of money. To go over that you will have to swap the injectors, the MAF, the turbo, the manifold (BB DET - the GTi-R DET already has a manifold that will take a bigger turbo), etc.

I think you probably need to do a little more research.

Even the SR20DE has forged rods. The GTi-R does have stronger bolts and better bearings. Both are available from either Nissan Motorsports or JWT. I don't think the GTi-R has forged pistons. I'm pretty sure they are cast.

While the GTi-R engine is stronger, the BB DET will be plenty strong enough for your goals. IMHO you will be wasting your money. For the extra $1,000-1,200 I could do a lot with a BB DET to make it faster than the GTi-R engine. The GTi-R engine is nice, and it's a bit exclusive, but IMHO not worth the extra money.

First, I suggested the SE-R mailing list archives, not SE-R.net. I also suggested the SR20DE Forum. They are all different. SE-R.net does have limited info on DET swaps, but not much. Best to look through the site index.

I think you are smart for delaying your project. That's a lot of money you are planning on spending. Be sure you are spending it wisely. :D

Boogie, you got anything to add? I think you're the forum turbo guru these days.

Yep... Why DET?

It's just an added cost. You can put less money into your DE which is not too old, and make that much HP. Why buy another engine just to dump even *more* money into?

If you want to make a 300whp DET you will need to get a larger turbo, and many other things. Like George said, the GTI-R pistons are cast just like the DE so you'll have to start worrying about doing work to the internals, or you can get a water injection system.

Personally I think the DET is just a waste of money for you (not to mention added headache of swapping and wiring). If you were going to be happy with 200 to 230whp, *then* yes I would tell you to just swap out your DE for a DET and you'll pay less than an FMAX or Hotshot turbo kit.

But if you're planning on 300whp, why buy a DET and then do a whole new turbo setup on it? Why not just stick with the DE? They are essentially the same engines. One comes with a turbo, one comes without it. Why buy the turbo version, if you're planning on a whole new turbo? ;)

Yea listen to P10DET he's a pretty sharp guy. The gti-r motirs are a lot harder to tune and they are a lot harder to get part's for:rolleyes:

From what i heard, the gti-r and the bb det are the same engines, the only difference is that the manifold on the det is larger because there is a larger turbo charger that comes on the engine, and the gti-r comes with a faintly smaller one.... Am I wrong ore right? :p

WAY wrong.

The BB DET uses many of the same components as the USM SR20DE.

The GTi-R DET uses a completely different block, head, and most other parts. Very very few USM SR20DE parts are interchangeable with GTi-R parts. The differences are numerous.

I believe that Louis Anaya spelled out all the differences a while back.

Do a search.

And it's Louis, not Louise. Big difference. ;)

Unfortunately the search function has been down for the last 2 months, which has put a year's worth of posts (40,000 posts) to waste unless you would like to manually browse through all of them...

The issue will be addressed... ;)
