getting frustrated,,94 jimmy

I have a 94 jimmy with the 4.3 w code engine.I just replaced the cpi and the nut kit and turned the fuel pump on to make sure no leaks.The truck runs great when cold and is really smooth.Once it gets to operating temp it idles rough and it will surge and almost stall.It also has a weird smell outside of the truck.it doesnt smell like gas I cant really describe it.Has anyone got any ideas on this... thanks

How hard was it to replace the CPI - my mechanic says I may need to replace this too
