You will need I beleive a 15mm socket on a 1/2" breaker bar, or something long to move the tensioner pully away enough to remove the belt, becareful, thereis allot of tension on it,. I used a long 1/2" extension on mine. Just be aware of the routing, the key is to get the belt on all the pullys but the power steering. As you move the tensioner you'll be able to slide the beltinto place.

The adjusters are on the power steering pump. You need to loosen a few bolts that lock the pump in position, then you can back off the adjuster. Once you have enough slack, you can slip the belt off. PAY ATTENTION to the routing of the belt. Make sure the new one is seated properly.

Oops! Sorry there muskypro, I was thinking about my 91 chevy silver. In fact on my 00XJ there is a tensioner pulley adjustment bolt just in front of the PS pump, loosen it enough to remove the belt. As far a retightening the tensioner, Its more of a "feel", I adjusted it till my A/C stopped squealing, been fine eversince. Again, sorry for the miss info.

Which way does the adjustment bolt go to loosen and can i use a socket on a rachet?

This thread will be closed after this comment because it is quite old.

However, keep in mind that the early model used the PS pump to adjust the "S" belt and the late models have their own tension adjuster. No Cherokees used the automatic adjuster.
