I would think your 98 318 would be similar to my 97 328. No, it's not difficult, but it does take some time to get to it.
First, remove the glove box. There are 8 screws that need to been removed to accomplish this. Two in the dash vents, two accessed from below and four that are visible when the door is open (two are under little plastic caps that have to be removed to access the screws).
Next the RH heater/ac floor duct has to be removed. It is held in place by two plastic pins. One is visible through the space the now available with the glove box removed. The other is harder to find and you have to lay on your back on the floor to see/remove it. Once the pins are out, the duct is removed by pulling to the right and down.
Now you can get to the filter. It's located in the heater intake duct, on top of the transmission hump. First, remove the access cover. The cover is about 6in high and 1in wide and has a big plastic knob on it. Unscrew the knob and remove the cover. Pull the filter out towards the RH side of the car. Some of the under dash wiring harness will have to be unclipped and pulled out of the way as the filiter is about a foot long and you need to make room so you are able to completely remove it from the heater.
If you want some photos, just let me know as I have my glove box removed as I am waiting for a replacement filter. Here's a hint for you. Order the replacement filter first as it may not be available in town.
Here's one for you. Do you know how to get the stock radio out of the dash. The manual says to loosen the two screws, then simply pull it out, but I can't get mine out that way.
