Guns and Doctors

Note the following alarming facts:

(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
(B) Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year are 120,000.
(C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.

Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept. of Health Human Services.

Guns:
(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. Yes, that is 80 million.
(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.
(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.0000188.

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, "Guns don't kill people, doctors do."

Fact: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand. Out of concern for the public at large, I have withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention.

(B) The number of "accidental" gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.

Now add the number deaths caused by guns period.
Then you can add the number of deaths "casued" by doctors period. (I don't think theres any doctors killing on purpose) So I would say it stays at 120,000

Update: 30,000 dead every year. (Including accidental) by guns every year in the U.S
So 30,000 deaths by guns "Overall", that would give these figures:

30,000 deaths(intentional and accidental) to 80 mil guns Thats 0.000375 deaths to every gun
So physicians still have a greater death rate

WOW SCARY

Should seeing a doctor have a five day waiting period?

I would love to have a doctor where I only had to wait 5 days to get an appointment.

I want you to question whether your MD is really that bad? You yourself can tell if something "isnt right" personally, I have seen more than my fair share of Doctors and still do on a regular basis and I don't see a problem with them. While yes, doctors make mistakes, fatal ones and ones that should be avoided, i'm not siding with them, there are so many good doctors that while this statistic is true, people should just be aware of what's going on.

hey..what would you say when doctors say "dont worry, i've had practice." yeah, cuz i over heard a doctor say that when i was gettin my teeth cleaned. Does that mean...they practiced...like their first victim...errr...patient..?

No, it means that they have done whatever they were doing before on someone else. And in most cases when a doctor does something especially something challenging for the first time a more experienced doctor is there assisting them.

I understand how that mistake was made, but I don't know all of her symptoms and such. Many times anxiety attacks/panic attacks have the same symptoms as mini heart attacks and if there is no family history, other symptoms, then that is what the diagnosis would be. I'm not standing up for the doctor but I am not completely agreeing with you either. I'm sure there was a mistake made, but you have to understand that doctors are forced to come up with a diagnosis based on symptoms and tests. He should have had her heart monitored if there were any signs that it could have been a heart attack but you have to understand that you have to work with what you're given. I'm not ragging or defending, just trying to explain.

Those statistics scream skewed/wrong data. 120,000 deaths CAUSED by only 700,000 physicians each year? I have to raise the flag here. :bs: Maybe that number refers to patients who died while under the care of a physician. I work in a hospital, and if there was one death per 5 or 6 physicians per year, there would be no more doctors to work. They would all lose their licenses if their mistakes caused patient deaths. Not to mention that every single hospital in the country would be bankrupt settling malpractice suits. No way, I don't believe it for a second.

The doctor tested my grandmas heart. He said that her heart was very healthy and nothing was wrong with it. He said that she was having anxiety attacks because her grand kids were moving and she couldnt see them but on holidays. After she had her last heart attack she went to the biggest hospital in our state. She was flew there and only lived 1 1/2 days i sat in the corner and watched her die. The doctors there who i am very greatful for told my entier family that even a firt day medical student could have seen from her tests this was a major heart failure that was happening. He said it looked in no way as a anxiety attack.

I am sorry for you lost but like I said, I didn't know all of the symptoms and yes doctors make mistakes, but proper precautions should have been taken especially at her age. Once again, I am very sorry for your loss.

Kind of funny, I had a relative (don't remember who), and the person had to get brain surgery, and right before the operation, the doctor told the person "This is the first one they're letting me do by myself". I though that was kind of funny, yet scary to the person getting the operation done.

sometimes i think its fucked up when doctors get sued. They go to school for alot of years to help people, make them feel better, and sometimes mistakes happen and they should be punished for it and not see how many lives they did save? you can notice the mistakes but y not how many people they saved?
But i will agree there are some doctors that are careless.

thanks for caring, yes I do agree many doctors do a excellent job and those I am glad to see. Its just the ones who are careless and dont look at every thing that get me pissed.
