fuel tank screen

hello everyone,,does anyone know exactly what the fuel tank screen is ?? a local mechanic told me when ever you replace the fuel pump you should alwaws replace the fuel tank screen..i was told the same thing by a auto parts store..this is not mentioned in my 95' aurora shop manual ???

Do they mean the fuel filter?

It's usually a nylon screen(like a trans filter)that strains the raw fuel before it enters the pump inlet.

OK, in my 1998 service manual it's called a fuel sender strainer, and it's on the bottom of the fuel pump.
It's under Fuel Sender Assembly Service.

yup,,i think your right..the garage made it sound like it was part of the gas tank..thanks for the reply..

The fuel screen is on a new fuel pump, already installed on it.
I did a pump/sender unit a while back and that is how it came,
with a new strainer sock already on it.
