High miles are something that can go both ways when thinking about a car. On one side of the coin, a well maintained car that has had part s relaced as soon as a problem was seen. For example, cars that had struts that were a little leaky, rotors that were a bit thin, and that slightly clicking cv joint that were replaced promptly are good ones. I had an 89 jetta with 256k on it and it was in better shape than my present passat with 147K. The difference is who oned it before. If they were majorly anal retentive, chances are they took good care of their car. A high miles car is going to be closer to needing a new clutch and a head gasket than a 50k Miles car, but hey... you get what you pay for. Take your time when looking, because if you do end up with a high miles car, make sure it's already long life was an easy one with an owner that took good care of his/her cars.
