i was driving down the road driving normally and suddenly the revs shot up and the car would not move. it starts fine and the gear selector moves all the way through from reverse to neutral, drive etc but the car wont move anywhere. it is a 5.7 v8 tpi iroc-z. somebody told me it may be the torque converter? any suggestions please....

definatly sounds like a tranny problem. the torque converter is a possibility, but they tend to make a helluva lot of noise when they go, if they dont outright explode, thats what scatter sheilds are for.
What is far more likely is that your clutch packs are gone. youll probly need a tranny rebuild.

first off is there a transmission cooler other than the one in radiator? hows the fluid look? check the radiator and make sure theres no trans fluid floatin in there, check the lines for leaks to radiator's trans cooler and auxiliary one if you have it and make sure fluid is good. if torque converter didnt blow i bet fluid ran low and you burned up all the bands. my friends lt1 caprice blew a line to trans cooler and it kicks ass up to 35 mph and thats it :(. every thing above 2nd gear i wanna say got burnt up from lack of pressure, and it acts almost same way urs is soundin.... just a thought. good luck
