Budget U-bend Delete

i was told that the "u-bend" is a very restrictive part of the exhaust and that i am losign a lot a power with it... and that with my CAI and pulley it makes it worse. Untill i can afford a proper u-bend replacement, i have thought of welding a peice of metal striaght tubing to fill the gap. Any suggestions on where i should locate my 02 sensor?
