Pistons Pinging

My 1996 chevy 350 stick shift, pings every time out of a stop, or when climing a slope. The only answer I get out there is higher octane gas, which I do not mind using when towing, but I do for everyday driving.

I susspect that the throttle position sensor may be telling the computer to advance the ignition too much too soon.

Any ideas out there?

2. Any vacuum leaks?
3. mileage?
4. Any work done to engine?
5. Last tune up done , last fuel filter change?
6. Timing set at??
7. Any check engine lights on?
Need more info

1) EGR valve is fine.

2) No vacuum leaks.

3) None was done to the engine.

4) The milage is 270,000, and it did it since it was new.

5) Last tune-up was performed just before I posted this thread.

6) There is no timing setting. The distributor is all electronic.

7) No engine light is on.

Have your Timing checked. I had the same problem with pinging on my 99 Tahoe. After I resealed the Intake, I took it to the dealer to adjust the timing.. Bingo- the spark knock went away and I can now go back to 86 Octane gas. I cost me $95, but I am glad I did it.
