I have a 95 Ranger 4x4 4.0 5spd w/210,000 miles. The tranny is whining in all but 4th gear. I was told I had a 2ndary shaft bearing problem. I took the tranny apart and dont see very much wear at all. Any ideas what's causing the noise?
Any ideas on where to get overhaul kits for this tranny(since its apart!)?
Thanks for yuor time.

ok no replies yet but any info would be appreciated.I am gettting a rebuild kit. It covers seals synchro, and bearings EXCEPT for the needle bearings. Has anyone had problems w/ the needle bearings to justify me replacing them also?

My '92 2.9L has a Mazda tranny as well. Last summer it started whining in all but 4th gear. A mechanic friend said that 4th gear is basically straight-through, i.e., no gear reduction, so it possible was the counter-shaft bearings. In November while I was on my way to the woods to go deer hunting the tranny shelled out all the gears except 4th, so I limped to my buddy's house in 4th. It turned out that a seal went bad, leaked out all the fluid and voila!, dead tranny. I'm guessing you're probably experiencing the same thing.
