yrp, i agree, you shouldnt have to change the chain unless it snaps or something. Its not supposed to wear like a belt does.

I had the tensioner replaced when I had my JWT/S3 cams installed. It's a good idea to change anyway because this part was improve upon because the reported chain clatter that was happening in the SR20DE
2.0 engine.

As Jason said, this ain't no POS Honduh. :D
I've examined a number of high mileage SR20 chains and am fully comfortable that the chain should not need replacement. Even the chain on the engine that came with my G was in great shape and that engine was the worst SR20 I've ever seen. More than one bearing was paper thin and the entire engine was so coked inside it looked like the La Brea tar pits. I'm not joking either.
The only chain I've heard of breaking on an SR20 was one with about 30k miles. The engine was replaced under warranty. Obviously the chain was defective.
The chain will last the life of the engine because, well, when the chain goes, the life of the engine is over. :D Cheaper to replace with a JDM engine. Expect to pay on the order of $500 to replace the chain in the car.

Unless there is some other compelling reason to change it like having the engine out of the car or some problem related to it, I wouldn't screw with it personally. I personally think start-up clatter can be related to changing a tensioner.
This is just my monkey opinion though.

Does the 'no need to replace the timing chain' apply to a 91 G20 that has 204,000 miles?

I recently bought a 1998 Chevy Cavalier Z24 convertible for my daughter. It has a 2.4L engine. The mechanic inspecting it noticed an oil leak from the timing chain cover, and recommended that MAYBE I might want to replace the timing chain on it. It has just over 105,000 miles on it. I could find no recommendations on replacement intervals for the timing chain, and found this instead. They also mentioned replacement due to it being an interference engine. So how extensive would the damage be if it broke? Is this guy just pulling my chain?
