1989 Nissan 240SX vs. 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer

Alright, this is going to be my second car, my first was a '89 Sentra. My Sentra was a stick and my friend's '02 Lancer is an auto, he spanked me the first time we raced (both vehicles stock), but on the second race I beat him because ... he can't drive, I won because I out handled him.

That same night I blew the head gasket in my Sentra, but a week later my cousin gave me her '89 240SX. I know the 240SX is 140hp stock and the 2002 Lancer is 120 (my '89 Sentra had a whoppin 78hp). I get my 240 tomorrow and we'll probably race again Friday. I'm wondering, do I stand a chance? I'm sure this car has lost some HP over the last 15 years.

EDIT: My 240 is a stick, his Lancer is an auto

I dunno what you mean by "out-handled him" in a drag race, but you'll kick his ass with the 240SX, more horsies, stick, RWD, don't screw up and it's in the bag. Well if the car is in good condition anyways.

Good Luck, man. Hopefully, it's not a Lancer Evo.

he said the lancer has 120 hp, not an evo

Nah I think the Evo's have more HP, but I out-handled him because he slowed down going into turns and I would slow down before them, speeding up out of them.

Oh well, I'm about to go pick up my 240 from my uncle's shop now, then we'll see what happens tomorrow night.

You race around turns on the street? Killed anyone yet?

Honestly, I'm not one of those dumbasses who races on crowded public highways.

We usually race on a country backroad, the speed limit is 55 and the road is rarely used between 9 PM and 6 AM.

I'm a concerned driver because the laws here are so strict, and because I really don't want to kill anyone unintentionally, so we race on this one road because it's particularly abandoned.

And the EVO comment was a bit of sarcasm, I know the EVO has more HP than the 240 and Lancer.

Trust me, I'm not on that "The Fast and the Furious" bullshit.

you THINK that evo's have more HP than the lancer?!?!?! um....yeah. not to mention...AWD. and other miscallaneous goodies that put it in the low 13 second 1/4 mile times.

but anyways....240sx should take a lancer, as long as its running on all 4 cylinders. i have driven a lancer and they have no "grunt" what-so-ever. :lol2:

EDIT: ok i was a little late....:D

That wasn't a threat aimed at you, as a newb here I'm trying not to:
1. Make enemies
2. Come off as a dickhead
3. Be a liar
4. Be a fucktard

But don't worry, I'm in Virginia.

Most people have to look on a map to find Wyoming. Virginia is a pretty nice place to live. Keep it under 110.

hahaha... wouldn't stand a chance against an Evo. on the other hand, the USDM lancer ain't all that great. i've driven one... it's not impressive what so ever.

Yeah, I understand it varies with driver skill, car condition and such.

Anyway I just got back from checking on my 240, it's still at my uncle's shop because he's putting on my fuel pump. Other than that the car is mechanically sound. I need four tires though and I'm probably going to go ahead and get some new wheels.

Any suggestions on the wheels? I want to find some nice ones that are 4-lug, because I don't know much about the 5-lug conversion and I'm not trying to really learn right now.

The only visual flaws are slight rusting under my 240SX logo on the back of the car and there is an area in front of my rear tires where a hole has developed (my uncle said it's nothing mechanical). Hopefully I can be cheap and get a bodykit to cover all that up, cause it'll probably cost a shitload to fix.

Looks like I won't be driving it much until February though, it'll start snowing here a bit after Christmas and I heard driver RWD in snow = shit. So I'll probably keep that minimal. Saving up my next few checks for Bodykit + Paintjob. I was thinking about Lambo doors but I want to keep my 240 a 240. And I don't want to get Ricey. Plan on having a few bolt-ons by end of January.

Anyway thanks for the information everyone.

scrap the kit and paint....you cant polish a turd. Just save up for performance and go out and have fun because you'll end up fucking up your paint and kit anyways once you realize how fun it is to drive this car in an open empty lot.

this is so true.. the smallest ding or scratch will piss you off and force you to spend even MORE money fixing it.. don't spend too much on the body until you've actually got a car thats fast enough to look that good
naw meen?

my paint is good besides the rust on the driver's side and the holes from the spoiler.. other than that i keep it really clean and smooth. it feels good to drive a clean car.. i'm no psycho about it but once it gets painted again, i'll be insane about it.. i worked with brand new cars for 3 years and know how much of a bitch it is to get a demo back thats been through the cloth wash.. a 4 hour high speed buff is NOT fun.. i say the paint you have should be taken care of but don't pay too much while doing so

I hadn't planned on spending much on paint anyway, my uncle has a high school friend who paints cars on the side. I just wanted that same factory red I have now. And a kit would only be to cover up some minor blemishes.

Anyway I'll have about $700 by the end of December, and I'm trying to figure out what I'll do first.

I'm figuring Tires will set me back anywhere from $200 - $400 (very rough estimate, only car I bought tires for before this was my '89 Sentra, and all four cost $150 new). Then I've got money for who knows what.

I don't know if I'm responsible/ready enough for a turbocharged car yet, but I've been reading up on Turbochargers. I'm still undecided as to whether I'll keep it N/A or go Turbo.
