2000 Explorer starting "stutter"

2000 Explorer - when I crank it (esp when cold) it "stutters" - engine turns over, then there is silence for a second & it sort of chokes & starts. Runs fine. Already had the IAC valve replaced in Aug, but that problem was different (wouldnt' crank or idle) - Fuel injection? IAC again? Doesn't seem to be electrical.

I have a limited addition 2000 and had the unit checked over before I bought it. It now has a shudder and makes a funny rattling sound in the exhaust area. I am sure the cat is shot and may be causing this problem.
I have a very good mechanic who will find the problem as I also have a start problem when its cold.
The shudder may also be a torque converter. but I first have to get the cat checked to rule it out.
Owning any car nowadays is like buying Microsoft software. The problem is ford is not providing the patches so we have to work together to find them. Now once we find the problem we can post load and clear the lack of assistance from ford and the fix. Then pursue the cost as a group v.s one at a time.
I mean you have to fix it anyway, so you might as well spend a few more min to collect the receipts and keep the paperwork.
I know a few warranty shields.. you know the guy you talk to in service who talks to you about the warranty. Lol their job is to make you go away.
P.S imports are just as bad but they charge more for parts.

imports are not "just as bad". why do you think toyota is the highest selling car in america? i own a 96 honda and i have no complaints, it runs flawlessly. if i had a 2000 ford, i would definetly not expect such problems as you describe. while the american cars are catching up in quality and support, it is only because their sales are getting totally destroyed by the imports.

My experience has you wrong.
Remember there are many people with imports who have problems and I know from personal friends who used to turn away people coming in for warranties for there imports as they fell apart. We are talking a year ago they were still doing this.
There are many great domestics and many of the imports can perform but the old attitude that the import is so far better is a load.
The only difference is the import buyer is a traitor and the domestic owner is a patriot. lol
Now comes the fun I have a Toyota and it blew the engine before my Pontiac did. The Toyota blew the engine at 150 thousand miles.
Sorry no better than old school American cars.
A friend’s Lexus with 50 thousand miles and the dealership does 6 thousand dollars worth of work and the car ends up being worse and the heater does not work. They fixedit for more money 300.00 and wala they are selling it and buying a caddy.
Imports are not better that are at most an equal because they have he style of an egg. My last visit to the Toyota dealership had me responding to the salesman who tried to get me to trade in my ford. He said you want to trade in your ford for this new Tacoma? I said that piece of crap? Lol later we talked and he admitted to many issues with some of the Toyotas and showed me he drove a chey truck.
I had a chevy Z71 s 10 blazer with the big (30 inch) tires and jumped it, did 4 wheel burn out and many other abusive actions with no problems what so ever. I even took out a traffic pole and drove away. Once I did the minor bodywork the car was serviced and ran like a top with no problems. Do that with your Honda! Id love to see a Honda eat a pole and drive away. Actually I would love to see a Honda jump through the air and still survive. Lol maybe a restored land cruiser might survive the pole. The jump would snap the tank in half. Remember we are talking stock so don’t start going off about performance trucks with specialty suspensions.
As for the standing of the domestic. ready for this Honda? The new Chrysler 300 and the dodge magnum kicked everyone’s market and all the big boys had reduced orders for this new year. You will find the style with the return to big hp will have the import going the way of the apple computer.
I am sure there are others who drive it to the grocery store and have problems. It happens and like I said expect it and cover yourself. Once we figure out what the problem is then share it. I figured someone would have alreadyfigured this out.

please tell me how any of the problems you mentioned of the imports are due to the car itself. they are are directly related to the use and driving style, as well is a possible poor job by the mechanic. while i do not discredit all domestics, it has been proven that the average import will last years longer under conservative use than will a domestic under the same situation.
Also, in what way is a 71 even comparable to a Civic? running into lightpoles?! I can confidently say that i have never had THAT problem. you are comparing a truck that is more than double even triple the weight of my car and DESIGNED for off road and heavy use, whereas my car is meant for the road and road only. as for being airborn, i would not dream of it.

I mean take a Honda sport utility "car" and you will find the same holds true for the Honda or Toyota trucks.
It is not that hard to make cars cheaper and have room for quality with the cheap labor their imports were based on. BUT now they are competing in a more equal market because domestics now are playing the same game. so the edge was and is not quality it is and was business style and format. The imports forced the use of outsourcing to cheaper markets without the same ethics and environmental regulations.
Import owners should be ashamed. lol
Yes I do tend to actual use my cars and thus i tend to buy domestic... they are built stronger. Imports are over refined into over interdependent messes of 7th grade toothpick structure.
The problem with the Toyota Celica was directly the result of a premature rubber belt wear..and it was not my car to drive it was driven to work and back by my wife. Yup and it crapped out. I rebuilt it for her. To do it right it cost more than the car was worth.
The Lexus? Same deal except it was driven for less miles and experienced regular maintenance at the dealership that ended with 6000.00 worth of rip off. Oh and the handle on the passenger side broke off in the hand of a 6 year old child. Lol please don’t ask me anymore your starting to embarrass Toyota. I could get a picture of my cute daughter with the handle in her hand? I’m sure Toyota would love ya for it.
The civic is a small and cheaper car so the issue of cost will be equally valued to the value of the car. I mean the repairs will cost about as much as the car or more.
I have one defense for the import. The Suzuki samurai. I loved all 3 of mine and jumped a 1986 14 times with only blown shocks and one time I landed on the side. Minor damage. The Suzuki was bare bones and built on a frame. Yes the light weight and small engine had this thing in my plus book due to the strength and wow the electrical was able to handle water fording without shorting out. The best part was the zuk could handle water up to the hood without drowning. I never did roll it and I tried. opps then they started to make unibody crap like the Honda.
Oh well.
I think it was Henry ford who said he would give away his cars if he could guarantee the owners would come back to him for repairs. lol

again, what you are citing are unavoidable flaws. something that cannot be eliminated. if you compare the Honda Passport to most domestic SUV's, then yes the Honda will probably be beaten in off road capability. But remember that Honda does not produce a vehicle that they intend for use off road anyway. The Passport is simply a small SUV....im not sure its even an SUV anyway, as is the case with many that are so called. I beleive this argument has been tried to its interest limits, and I respect your points as well as maintaining intelligence, unlike many on these forums.

So back to the issue the 2000 ford has cold start issues and a few others does anyone know of a source for probable solutions or actions they took to fix the problems?
