87 ranger starter problems

I bought an 87 Ford Ranger I had to replace the starter several times, but come to find out that there were two made that year but, only Motorcraft sells the original starter. Now that I have the original starter in, it starts fine when the engine is cold, but when the engine gets hot, it grinds. Can anyone give any feedback.
