Had this problem for about a year. Starts fine but then the RPMs drop till the engine dies. Takes about 1-2 sec. Mechanic told me there was nothing he could find. Replaced the battery and the incidence of this dropped to about 1/2. Hitting the accelerator a little when starting helps but it will still die sometimes. Would really appreciate any help.

Clean the Idle Air Control motor. It sounds like there is not enough air getting into the engine while idling and that is why it is stalling out. It is located on the throttle body and not hard to clean. Remove, use carb cleaner spray, allow to dry, replace.

Sorry, but I left out an important detail. If the car does not stall out in that first 1-2 sec, it settles into a perfect idle.

I had that same problem with my 99 GT--turns out it was the fuel regulator. Got that fixed and it starts perfectley every time...but the car has so many other problems that it doesn't even matter

I also have that problem with my 99 GT. I recommend you clean the idle air control motor before replacing anything. I did that and it seems to have helped at least for now.
