Premium Audio Lock Down

I recently purchased my 96 Jetta GL and was transferring over my Kenwood head unit. I took out the stock premium audio head unit and hooked up my Kenwood using the wiring harness that I bought. When I proceeded to put the head unit in the dash my crappy wiring job caused a short and a fuse to blow. I replaced the fuse yet the radio would not turn on again. I wanted any audio by this time so i opted to put in the stock premium stereo again. When i put it in the screen with the information does not light up. The backlights for the buttons light up but not the actual radio. So now neither of my radios work and I have no music. I went to the VW dealer and they were practically no help. My dad is saying something about fuseable links or something along those lines for being the problem. All my fuses are good but this fuseable link thing could be a possibility. I also tried disconnecting the battery and reconnecting everything else but to no avail. If anyone could provide insight on this topic and how to fix it it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
John

Is the wiring for the deck grounded still?

Yes it was and I fixed it. I found out that when I bought the car 3 days ago i had a bad key that was bent. I tried this in the ignition and messed up one of the switches in the ignition harness. So my dad helped me to piggy back the stero wire onto one of the other wires so that my stereo would get power. Thanks a lot for all the input!

I know it's a little after the fact, but I had the EXACT same problem with my '97 vdub Jetta. I bought an after market deck (a Kenwood in fact...) and while I was installing it I shorted something out couldn't get any power to the stereo. The door signal wouldn't work either. I had an electrical shop look at it and they said it was ignition switch too. Small world.
