Does the cat on a 96 camry simply bolt on to the rest of the exhaust? Reason being, my dad's cat is about to go out and most likely won't pass emissions test for the yearly state inspection, and rather than take it into the shop, i'd like to fix it. Thanks in advance for your replies.

As far as I know, the converter does just bolt on, but in most cases, it's fairly difficult to remove the bolts by hand, so you'll probably need an air ratchet or something to get it off.

thanks for the reply! ya, i'll probably try to get the bolts off by hand. i was able to remove my cat off my 3000GT with a little difficulty, but nothing a little elbow grease couldn't fix. thanks again.

Well, best of luck to you...be sure to find yourself a can of WD-40 to get those rusty bolts loosened up a bit.

actually WD-40 won't help much. its a lubricant, whereas when messing with exhaust bolts/nuts, its best to use a rust penetrant. i have some rust penetrant that works well.

in fact, i found out that my dad's car passed inspection...the check engine light did NOT come on, so i guess he can wait another year before he thinks about getting the cat replaced, at which time i will definitely do it for him. but thanks for the helpful info, though.

It's good to know that you won't have to replace the converter now. You're also correct about the lubricant, WD-40 will just make it messy. I do believe that Gunk makes some really good rust penetrant that is available at most hardware stores for a decent price. It's what I've been using to remove exhaust components for years.
