Trying To Kill The Ghost in My Machine

All of us on this forum have had problems with our "Chrysler" products from time to time that we have not been able to figure out ourselves. (I own a 1996 Chrysler Town and Country.) Or for that matter maybe no one has been able to figure them out. These problems are usually somewhat minor or not.
My latest one is that the battery goes dead if the van is let to sit for more than four days at a time. So because of that I have a spare battery charged up at all times ready to go. Well yesterday a new wrinkle. When I tried to start it up it did the half dead battery thing again and would not start. So I go thru with putting in the other charged one in and not only does it not start I lose all my electrical (all lights inside and out, dash lights everything). Every time I try to start it the same thing a complete blackout. It's looking more and like a system short. Well all I can think oh my god I have a big electrical problem.
I am sure that anyone that has had a bad electrical problem with their cars can feel my pain. All I can think about is this is going to cost me big bucks to fix.
Well by now the second battery has gone dead as well, so I put it back on the starter over night and just try to think of anything else that it might be. Previous to this happening I had been having some problems with my after market alarm system going off for no reason. The next morning I thought that is where I would start. I traced down the alarm wires to a small module with tape round it but kind of falling out off. I took to rest of the tape off and it appears to be very corroded. I than disconnected it and tried to start the van. Guess what it starts right up. Than I went down to Pep Boys and got some contact cleaner and a new module and all is well for less than $11.00.
I am not a mechanic but I do have a general knowledge of it. With the cars today I was really just shooting in the dark and hit a bull’s eye. But this did make me feel good that I at least tried to fix it before calling a tow truck.
Thanks For lessoning, digimon
