Me vs Viper GTS

Alrighty, here goes...
Well, I was cruising along the highway doing about 60 (in a 55 zone), in the far right lane just kinda going slow to see if anything worth racing will come up from behind. Well, there was absolutely NOTHING. Ahh screw it, I'm about 3 miles from my exit, I guess I won't get to play with anything.
Well, I check my rearview mirror real quick just to see what was behind me, and notice a car with foglights. Hmm, maybe it's something? My friend looks back to see, but it was still too far too really see, "I think it's just a fuckin' Intrepid," he said. Well, about 2 seconds later, we look to my left and see a Viper GTS go cruising by. He was probably doing about 70. As he passes, I notice he has exhaust. So, I speed up to match him. As I get about a car behind, he downshifts and takes off! I reacted way late, but I punched it anyways. As soon as I gave it full throttle, he stopped pulling away and we just hung there. He wasn't pulling, but I don't think I was pulling any either. We probably got up to 120-130, I really wasn't paying attention.
Well, I let off and he kinda kept on it a little longer, but began to slow down quickly to exit off the highway. Sweet, he was taking MY exit!
So, we are cruising down this 3 lane road. There were a few lights ahead, so I was hoping I'd get to run him from a stop. I KNOW I'd rock his world from a stop! Well, sure enough, a light ahead turns red. The Viper got in the left lane, a Camry was in the middle (DAMN!) so I had to get into the far right lane. I wasn't sure if he was going to go for it when the light turned green, so when we got the green, I just sorta rolled onto the gas. The viper did the same, but I looked over, and he was looking at me waiting for me to make my move. He threw me a quick rev, I goosed the gas. As soon as I did that, I hear him downshift . As soon as I heard the downshift, I jumped on it! He did too, but I was steadily pulling away. I had to shut down rather quickly though, due to traffic! But I knew from a stop I'd have killed him. He made a turn and went into a neighborhood....
Oh well. It's too bad I didn't get a clean run with him from a stop. :D

Wow, what do you have done to your car now? I've raced a couple Vipers in my old Z28, one stock, one with exhaust and a couple other things, nothing too major. I murdered the stocker pretty bad, but the slightly modded one was a pretty darn close race. I believe the times in that race were something like ME = 11.3X, HIM 11.7X or somethin like that. A pretty good victory at the track, but on the street, that's a really close race. Even I wasn't pulling away from him easily...

slowAndfurious: I have a few pics posted somewhere around here. It looks no different now then it did when it was stock. Aside from the exhaust tips. That's it though. Unless the car is running, you can't tell that it's modified.
Yes, I would have really liked to get a chance at it from a stop. I know I would kill it if I had traction, but oh well. I'm sure there will be a few at the track for me to stomp on. :D

your stories are always so detailed.

buh_buh: Yeah, I really wanted a CLEAN run at him from a stop. I wasn't at all surprised he was even with me from a roll. Afterall, Vipers ARE 6 speeds leaving me at a disadvantage with my automatic. Especially with my big converter. From a stop, it would have been a much better outcome for me, I'm sure of that.
Also, I think it makes the story more fun to read when they're detailed. Kinda gets you IN the story, if ya know what I mean...

Blackbird what kind of mods do you have? Because a normal trans am would not hold a candle to the gts.

Ahhhh drag radials, now I know why you believe you would have eaten him up from a stop. That'll do it with the rest of the mods. I have a buddy with a 94RT that I eat up off the line with both VR4s but damn if I can do anything with him after the first hundred yards or so. The torque, even in the older cars, is one hell of a thing to overcome. Considering how much that WS6 of yours is producing, you aught to do allright against one through all the gears.

Hey Blackbird,
Nice car u have. My brother has a LS1 Z28 heavily modded and juiced, smokes Vipers all the time. The only problem is traction.
I remember onetime I was riding shotgun in my bro's Z28 and rich boy with a convertable Viper was driving along the side of us reving back and forth. My brother said "Hey, have you ever had your ass kicked by a camaro"? The Viper driver responded "Dude, those things are only 20k" (fucking retard). Well, to make a long story short, we smoked his ass and he learned that he paid too much for his car.

Yogs: My drag radials are bald. Even if they weren't I still would have a hard time with traction. I'm making just as much power as the Viper, but I'm in a lighter car. Not to mention, the converter on my car is HUGE, making my car really quick from a stop or slow roll.
Unless I'm on an ET Street, there's no way I'd be able to dead hook if I were to just PUNCH IT.

Ahhh, but then you'd have no rear axle! Trust me...I've learned from experience, hehe...:)

My rearend would hold.
Although it's stock, I have an automatic, which takes much of the "shock" away. I know of a Z28 that runs 10.66@125+ and concistently cuts 1.3-1.4 sec. 60' times on the STOCK REAR END.
They aren't as weak as everyone makes them out to be, and as long as you're careful, it will last a LITTLE while. However, I will be ordering and installing a new rearend around mid summer.

Well you have more luck than I've ever had. On my previous Z28. I went through stock rears on my old Z. My first one went on my second run of the day. My first run it felt like everything was holding up perfectly and I clocked a 12.1X. Second run, rear went up in smoke. Later that same year, I replaced it with another stocker(I was short on funds) and broke that one soon after. I then purchased my Moser and didn't have any problems thereafter. Held up perfectly after numerous 10.2 - 10.5 runs on ET Streets. Maybe you'll have better luck than me, but I think you're making the best decision in going with the new rear as soon as possible.
Maybe it's just my bad luck though...I went through 4 clucthes, 2 rears, and a tranny. Maybe those 5500 clutch dumps has something to do with it though:D. My stock clutch started slipping soon after I added i/h/e. Purchased a Centerforce Dual Friction and had it burn away after about 3 months of street driving and about 5 - 8 passes at about 12.1. Next switched over to a Star SPEC Stage III Ceramic and it went after about 6 months of street use and about 30 passes at 11.1 - 11.5(with the stroker upgrade:) ). Finally, I got wise and picked up a McLeod Street Twin, and had no more problems. Not even after I went with the 150 shot of nitrous. Everyday driving, and 50+ passes in the low 10s, 5000k clutch dumps and all, no problems with it. I had to take it out once to adjust it(shoddy installation), and that was after about 3 months of having it and around 15 passes. Still in pristine condition, hardly any wear at all.
My rearend would hold.

NSX-R-SSJ20K,
More detail? sorry I was at work when I posted that.
Seriously, what more is there to say? A viper got its ass whooped by a Camaro and thats not the first time its happend. I think the styling of the Viper is great and all, but thats all your really gonna get. The V10 in the Viper is not too impressive. Dodge should have equiped the Viper with at least a supercharger. If you were a major car company, wouldnt you wanna put enough power into your prototype to smoke a juiced LS1?
I'm not a big domestic car fan, but I am learning to appreciate GM a little more. My brothers Camaro has a lot of internal engine mods, cams, intake, full exhaust, STS, N2O and other stuff which makes that fucker move. Not to mention the fact that he's a crazy ass driver and will race anybody that thinks of reving at him. Last weekend, we raced a yellow Lotus Esprit on the 101 in phoenix and whooped its ass all motor. I'm not sure how much HP the lotus has or even if its turbo charged, but he put up a good fight. I'm sure that on a track the lotus would whoop all over a camaro.

I guess I feel differently about the Viper.
I respect it a lot.
I know I'd get my ass handed to me by even a stock one on a road course, but since I'm all about drag racing, I dont give 2 shits.
I have seen a couple of S/Ced Vipers. The most impressive one put down over 800rwhp...
I don't think Dodge really gives a shit if a sprayed LS1 can beat a stock Viper. Because that's just it. The fact that it TAKES nitrous to beat a STOCK Viper is impressive in its own.
There aren't many cars that can hang with a Viper, and those that CAN are often over $150,000.
The Viper is the perfect option for those guys that want exotic speed without the exotic price tag.
But to get back on subject...
I want a shot at a Viper on the track.
I'll guarantee I win by several cars :D
I'm really pissed I didn't get a chance to do it on the street, but oh well.
