explain the logic of removing the y-pipe

(i'm new here, but i searched the archives and couldn't find anything addressing how it works with stock setup...)

i know it's supposed to increase the air available to the engine, but how?
i understand how it works with the K&N filter intake performance kit cuz it's open,
but does removing the y-pipe make any sense if you keep the stock airbox, considering the airbox hole is on the side and not facing the front of the vehicle?
or is there a way to push the air towards the hole?

further, i can't get to the resonator box (to remove it). from what i've read, it's covered by a splashguard. is this a pain in the butt to remove?

If you get to the resonator box and take it out, take note to the fact that there are no holes to allow air into the box. Well unless you count that pinhole. Removing the y pipe allows the engine to draw air in freely unlike before where it had to pull air in through gaps in the fittings or wherever it gets air from. Truly it is a mystery to me how the car ran. But this is why doing these mods provides power gains. All in all, it allows the engine to inhale and flow more air. Flow=power. Anything that allows the car to draw more air in or get rid of more exhaust gives power gains.

As for the resonator box, iirc it has three bolts holding it in. One is a pain in the ass because it is between the fender and the resonator box. Extensions are probably required. I don't remember a splashguard.

the air comes from the front of the car, into the y-pipe. somehow the resonator box decreases the sound of the air coming in. the y-pipe DOES actually push air into the airbox's hole (which, i'll repeat, is on the SIDE)... do you see what i'm getting at? if you remove the resonator box and the y-pipe, it's gonna sound louder and there may be more air, but how is it going in the side of the airbox? that's why i was saying i understand how the open design of a K&N cone air filter (which wouild replace the airbox) would really benefit, but don't see how it helps with a stock airbox. is there something i can do to funnel all that extra air into the stock airbox?

Nothing is pushing air into the engine. If something was pushing air into the engine, it would be considered a ram-air style intake system which the 240sx does not have. If you ever get that resonator box off, you'll see that there is nowhere for air to enter the box. The engine draws air into the airbox and indeed the entire intake system. If air was being forced in, the engine would not be considered a naturally asperated engine. If you don't believe me, then leave it on.
