Hi All,
We (my friends and myself) are building a project car called the SN65.
We have been posting some info on the net and were wondering if you have heard of this project.
If so... What have you heard???
If not... Should we post info on this site???

Hi Thunder,
Actually, yes...
Our thirst for automotive excess has been fueled by the over abundance of hot rod build shows on the tube. We see these shows and tell ourselves "S&!T, We could do that" followed by an enthusiastic "Why don't we!!!" Well, what once upon a time started as something simple and innocent has turned into an all encompassing beast that will not be happy until it sucks the very lifes blood from our bodies leaving us crumpled in a limp, formless mass, with no clues left, for those who survive, as to why... Why... WHY....
Let the good times role.

what kinda Engine you gonna dump in that bad boy...If ya want the latest in fuel-injected performance i would get a rebuilt 5.0L from a 94-95 Mustang GT...215HP stock which already could beat most Maro's and Firebirds of its day..if your feeling very crazy i would suggest the new supercharged 4.6L with 390HP!

Hi Burn,
Well... it is getting the entire 03 Cobra drivetrain (engine, trans and IRS). We are looking at upping the power a little. Maybe updating the blower with a screw type Whipple or KB.
That should move this beast at a fair clip. :-)

The best way to bring everbody up to date is to refer you to another forum where you can find all the in progress shots.

Hope this helps shed some light on what I am doing and what has been done so far.

Hi All,
Sorry I havn't posted any updates lately, but things have been a bit rushed over the past week or so.
Work has been placing demands on my time. :-(
On top of that, my brother was in an accedent last week. Some idiot (driving when he was talking on his cell phone) pulled out in front of him (Wayne was doing about 50MPH at the time). Wayne went to the emergency room and the fool walked away. Wayne is OK, but he is going to be a bit sore for the next few weeks.
Anyway.... I digress.
Even at that we have a little work to report.
We have all the panels fit and ready to weld on the rear of the car. Also, we have found that we will not be able to just graft the 03 flairs to the quarter and have it look the way we want. We are going to have to copy the 03 design and modify it to mate properly to the 65 body.

I will be posting more in the upcoming days.
Catch you all later.

Hi All,
Well here we are as of this morning.
We have all the bracing and panels fit up for the front end. I lost a lot of time with the original bracing in that it would not clear the front wheel (when the wheel was turned all the way inboard and the suspension was compressed 100%). I will be putting the measuring system on the car and start welding up the entire fronnt structure today. I should have all that done by tomarrow.
We configured the rear wheel housings. They are the original 03 outer housings. We trimmed and formed them to mate up to the 65 quarters. It would have been much easyer to tub the rear, but that would not have maintained the "factory" look we are going for.

http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1967
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1968
You will also note that I have possitioned the 65 windshield wiper mounting points on the cowl. I still have to decide on the location of the motor and linkage. I guess I will figure that out once I remove the 65 dash and possition the 03 dash and can check for clearance.

For the suspension we are going with Maximum Motorsport items. Tubular K-member, control arms, bushings, coil over (front and rear), etc...
For the trans, we are going with the stock 03 Cobra item.
Any recommendations for improvment???

Progress, progress, progress....
The push is on. Enough with the fitting and figuring and calculating and planning and fiddle *^&@$*& around. Damn the torpedoes, weld, weld, weld.
We installed the measuring system to check the dims one last time before we started welding. It was a good thing too. I had tacked the drivers side shock tower in the wrong location. :-( I was actually 8mm off (shifted to far back). I am not quite sure what this would have done to the alignment, but it could not have helped much. So... after grinding off a dozen tacks and repositioning the shock tower, I am please to report that we are now within 1 or 2mm everywhere.
Woo Hoo :-)
I have finished welding in the tower braces and the body to firewall cowl side pieces. I have some touch up to finish (I located some spot weld holes on the trim pieces that ended up in mid air. Opps... but it is nothing that a little welding can't fix).
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1973
After I finish the touch up welding and grinding (lots and lots of grinding). I will reinstall the measuring system. Check all the dims one more time and finish welding up the frame rails.
Let the good times roll.

Hi All,
Well. After countless hours of welding and grinding, I have the cowl / firewall area finished. I still have to fit the cowl cover in place, but I will not be able to do that until I decide how to install the windshield wiper motor and linkage.

All told, I am very happy so far.
Time to check the measurements again and finish the frame rails.

Hi TDS,
Actually, there was nothing wrong bodywise. Just a slightly used 03. We did give consideration to using a smashed car. We really did. We even took a look at one, but we were conserned with the issues that would arise when using a smashed car for this build.
We would have had to repair any structural damage before we could start and we were not quite sure how we were going to approch some construction issues before we actually got knee deep in the project. Also, if the car was smashed, we would not be ablt to sell off the outer panels (hood, bumper covers, head and tail lights, etc...)
On top of that, the smashed ones are not all that cheep, unless they are really *&#$ed up.

Hi All,
I just could not stay away.
I cam in just to trial fit the front fenders and valance to get an idea as to how things are shaping up.
Here are some photos.

http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1982
After mocking things up a bit I am thinking that I will not have to relocate the front valance. I will be incorporating a front spoiler that will cover the bottom of the core support and also help direct air through the openings I will be cutting for intercooler air flow, etc... I have taped the rough outline in green tape.
Anyway... I will be doing a bit of thinking over the new year holliday and hopefully have a good plan formed and ready to go by the 3rd.
Catch you all then.

Hi All,
Question???
What is the maximum backspace you can get on a 9" wheel???
I want to get two 9" with 7 1/4" backspacing and two 8" with 6 1/4" backspacing.
Also, can I use 7 1/4" backspacing on the rear if I change the cradle bolt from a hex head to a pan head / allen type fastener???
What do you think???

Hi all,
I have been concentrating on finishing up the front clip. Welding and grinding and welding and grinding and more welding and more grinding...
Sigh...
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1994
I have bolted in the Maximum Motorsport K-member and It is going to work out just great. I am very impressed with the quality of fabrication. Very nice design and construction. If you are thinking of installing one on your car, I would not hesitate to recommend them. Also, Jason seemed very knowlegable.
I also have been trying to figure out how to install the windshield wipers. This is going to be the toughest part of the whole project. Nothing I have tried so far works. The arm bushings are just to long. To make then fit, I will have to move the mechanisim inside the car and there is just no room under the dash. :-(
Maybe I will eliminate the WW's and say that it is a styling kind of thing.... I would have installed the wipers, but I left them off because they spoiled the clean lines of the car.
I will have to think on this one for a while.
I also have cut out the 65 dash and placed the 03 in place. I will have to do some trimming here and there and also fabricate some plates for the main attachment points, but I really think it is going to look fantastic.

DEATH TO IRS! i have it in my car and i really hate it. i would try to put a solid axle back there. good luck and keep us updated.
I agree. Get that non-performance crap out of there. You get a smooth ride at the cost of some handling and a ton of straight-line performance. Put a proper 4-link and a nine inch in there. Ford must have been smoking some damn good crack when they put IRS in the Cobra. Defies logic. The only downside to a solid rear is they tend to get squirrelly if you're cornering hard over rough road/potholes.
The reason IRS handles better over rough road is the reduction of unsprung weight, since the diff is bolted to the frame. Buy a fabricated lightweight 9inch, aluminum 3rd member, lightweight diff/gears, etc, build a well designed 4-link(satchell link is best IMHO), and it'll handle and launch great, better than a stock cobra IRS I'd think.
If you want to get fancy, build a De Dion tube IRS with a satchell type link on the de dion tube. Removes the diff from the sprung weight(benefit of IRS), with the handling and anti-squat of a live axle(benefits of live). I hope to do this for my mustang.
Cool project. Gives me some ideas for my '69. But I'll probably just build a frame from scratch, get rid of the unitbody garbage.

Hi All,
I think I have the wiper issue resolved. I ordered a custom kit based on all the input I received over the past week and I think it will work out fine. :-)
I have started to fit up the front suspension pieces. I need to get the engine installed and the major systems installed so that we can finish the sheet metal work on the upper fenders. We wouldn't want to paint everything and then find out that we need to modify something at that point.
Anyway... Here are some shots of the Maximum Motorsports front end. Very nice items. I have not run into a single problem with any of their items as of yet.

Please someone must have a solution for this problem.
Sigh... :-(

Hi all,
Here are some photos showing the relocation of the motor mounts. There will be a lot of trimming and a lot of pieces added to tie the structure together. When finished it should look like one cohesive structure.
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2003
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2004
Anyway... You can see where the connection for the rack will be in relation to the new motor mounts. This is where the interference with the Cobra oil cooler needs to be resolved.
I think I can work things out with the standard 4.6 oil filter mounting casting, but I am still looking for better alternatives.
Catch you all later.

Hi All,
Here is the modified K-Member. I still have a bit more work to do (a few more gussets to fab and install), but it gives you the general idea.
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2005
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2006
If you compare it to the last photos I posted you will notice that we have trimmed and fit the factory member to the tubular member we picked up from Maximum Motorsports, and we have removed the tubular members motor mounts.
You can now see where the power steering linkage comes up in the general area of the oil cooler and alternator.
I will be removing the alt & oil cooler, bolting up the K-member, installing the normally aspired oil filter casting and working up a bracket for the relocation of the alternator.
Wish me luck

Hi All,
Man!!! Taking off the oil cooler casting was a real pain in the A$$.
I have been at it most of the day. I had to modify a 13mm OE wrench to get the last trapped bolt off.
Anyway, I have the K-member in possition under the motor. I am going to modify a NA oil filter casting rotating the coolant connection 90 degrees. I am also going to have to clearance the K-member for the alternator. What do you think??? About 3/8" should do it???
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2007
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2008
Anyway. I should have the K-member mods finished tomarrow. I will have to order the new oil filter casting, cut it and tig weld it back in the proper configuration.
What a project!!! Who's smart A$$ idea was this??? Will it never end???
AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!!!!
Whew. I feel much better.

Hi All,
Here is a shot of the modified K-member. I have modified the member to give me some clearance for the alternator.
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2009
When I had the member in position (on the engine) I traced the outline of the alt onto the rectangular tube plus about 3/8" for clearance. I then used the plazma cutter to cope out the rectangular tube. I ground off the side tabs of the piece I removed, shaped it to the curve I wanted and welded it in place. I then made some cresent shaped pieces out of flat stock and welded them to the sides of the tube. I then shaped a flat piece to match the curve of the cresent and welded it in position. This gives the part the illusion of being bent out of one piece of tube.
It should look great after blasting and painting.
Now I have to get this whole thing (trans and all) bolted into the car so that I can put the full weight on the suspension and give the entire chassis a good inspection.

Hi All,
Today we are getting ready to finish welding the rear sheetmetal. I have mocked up the front sheetmetal so that the bodyman can determine if he has to make any adjustments to the rear quarters in order to get the best possible body lines from the front to the rear of the car.
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2011
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2012
If he does not have the entire car to judge his fitup, we could run into fitup / alignment issues when we finish the front.
We are always trying to look at how everything effects everything else all the time. We do not want any surprises at this point.
Also, I have roughed out the front valance openings. I think that it is going to look pretty cool when the valance is all detailed out.
While Wayne is working on the rear of the car, I am going to start working on the windshield wiper setup and installation.
More on monday. Catch you later.

I reviewed the WW setup. I should be able to get this to work BUT...
If I use the motor supplied in the kit, I will have to locate it under the dash (it is not suitable for installation inside the engine bay). If I can modify the ford motor to fit, I can locate it anywhere I choose and I will also maintain all the factory electrical hookups and functions. I will be looking at this today and see what I can come up with.
So, I will be working on the dash modifications required to get the dash to fit and also the WW modifications.

Hi All,
I NEED SOME TECH HELP!!!
Is the delay function in the Ford WW setup controled by electronics located in the dash board or is it integral to the WW motor itself. The motor that came with the kit has connections for Hi speed, Low speed, +12V and park. Are these the same 5 connections on the 03 Mustang motor?
What do you think?

i don't know about '03s, but in my '89 lx 5.0, the intermittent (delay?) controller is under the dash, near the steering column and pedals, in a small brown plastic box. i found this out because i almost broke mine changing from automatic to manual pedals. it makes an audible click when i use intermittents

Hi All,
Well I have been working on the windshield wiper setup. The WW kit manufacturer says that the motor is not suitable for location in the engine bay due to temp limitations. They recommend that the motor be located inside the passenger compartment. In order to find a suitable interior location for the WW motor I needed to position the dash.
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2017
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2018
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2019
To position the dash I needed to trim back the dash pad (about 2") at the point where it wraps around the windshield pillars. I still need to trim back about another 1/2" for a perfect fit, but I will wait on that until I am ready to actually install the sucker.
After positioning the dash, I was at a loss as to where to mount the WW motor. I am going to loose the entire dash between the defroster ducts and the windshield. In fact, I am going to have to modify the defroster ducts a bit if I want them to fit at all.
I scratched my head for a bit until I called my brother Wayne over for advice. After looking around a bit, he said lets mount the motor in the wheel well. There is plenty of room in the passenger side wheel well where the shock tower used to be. And, the installation will be pretty straight forward. Wayne said that we just have to be careful to make sure that the wheel clears the assembly when turned full right.
Oh well… The coffee is ready, people are starting to show up at work, time to get to it.
Catch you all later.

Hi All,
Well here is the WW installed in the cowl. I have bonded the aftermarket WW trans inside the original 65 WW castings. I then bonded the entire ass'y to the cowl. I used a special panel bonding adhesive designed to bond body panels together. Hope I did not make any mistakes along the way because this sucker is never coming apart, which is probably a good thing. I am going to have to weld the cowl in place, after which I think I will have a slight accessibility issue.

I am locating the drive inside the driver’s side fender. I will not complete the installation until I can check out the aftermarket motor's electrical functions. I just need to find someone with a newer Mustang that I can use to check motor functions.
Any volunteers???

PS: I can see why some people choose to just eliminate the WW ass'y. I have spent about a week researching calculating and installing this setup. I will be real happy when it is complete, but getting this far has been a tough row-to-hoe. Thanks to all who helped with the component selection and installation tips. I never would have been able to get this figured out without your help.

They have the flat area at the outside of the lip that I wanted. With just a little work, I think these will work out great.

Hi All,
Well this weekend was not as productive as I would have liked (1/2 day Sat due to snow and decided that we needed some down time and did not work Sun), but we did make some progress none-the-less.
Wayne installed the 65 rear bumper struct braces and fabricated a flanged open channel to tie this piece to the 03 Cobra frame rails. So now the 65 bumper mounting brackets tie directly to the frame rails, just like a real car.
Also, Wayne finished up all the spot welds on the rear sheet metal. Wayne had everything on the rear fit up last weekend with spot welds to hold the panels in place. Now the wheel housings, quarter panels and rear tail light panel are welded complete. Also, he spent a lot of time fine tuning the trunk gaps.
Here are some photos of the frame rail / bumper brackets and the trunk gaps. Note the trunk floor extension panel and the trunk latch mounting bracket ready for installation.

I am concentrating on finishing up all the welding so that I can get the chassis off to the media blaster. One of the things that needed to be finished was the side brackets for the dash.
In order to make sure that the brackets are located properly, I had to mock up the interior. I installed the firewall padding, the heater/AC, the dash, the carpet, the center console and the seats.
http://www.horsepowered.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2033
Pretty cool
I found that I have to both raise and rotate the dash forward on the drivers side. I also have to trim the side mounting brackets for proper fit before welding them in place.

Hi All,
Sorry I haven't posted any photos lately, but I am working on stuff that does not have much "visual" impact. Locating brackets for the break lines, cruise control, horn, electrical harnesses, dash board, etc...
The only thing of a visual nature will be the extended steering linkage. We have sectioned the factory unit. We have ordered a length of 3/4" diameter cold rolled steel, a 3/4" U joint and a 3/4" stamped steel, static aligning, pillow block bearing. I will take some more photos after I get that welded and fit up.

Hi All,
Here is the modified steering linkage. Note that we had to cope the MM for clearance. We currently have the assy shimmed to keep the shaft extension parallel with the frame rail. We can remove a shim or two if we need more exhaust manifold clearance when we fit the engine.

Hi All,
This weekend we continued to work the body.
We modified the trunk openings inner lip (to accept the 03 trunk gasket). This should give us a much better seal than the 65 gasket on the trunk lid.
We worked on modifying the front fenders to accept the Cobra 17x9's. We cut away just enough material to fit the 65 fenders around the tires. We fit up the fenders and mocked up the flares to give us an idea as to how they are going to fit.
After we got them close to where they will end up (we want the top of the wheel openings to be at the same height (26"), we stood back and looked at the car. Even though we still have a ways to go, we got a glimpse of what the finished product will be.

If you look at the close-up of the front fender, you can see how the flare fits up. You will also notice that the flare stands away from the fender at the "side scallops". We kind of like this look and are thinking of leaving the area open to the fender to act as a functioning extractor. What do you think???

Anyway... Today I will be working on fabricating the upper engine bay aprons. Also, Wayne wants to set up the measuring system again and check the major dim's before I fit these pieces in place. Once I weld up the cowl and front aprons there is no more tweaking, so everything best be fit up just so.
