Engine Ticking '02 Duratec

I hear a constant, steady ticking noise from my '02 Duratec. Any idea what that is? Dealer seemed unconcerned but it does not seem normal to me - and it is aggravating. At least it distracts me from the creaking front suspension. I have had this car a month today and have had it into the shop 3 times so far.

I have a clicking in my 97 Duratec and I've noticed it in some other Duratecs also, so I just learnt to ignor it. I know. Clicking doesn't seem to be a natural sound in a motor. Specially when it increases with RPM, but it seems to be the nature of the beast.

Hope this helps ease your mind a little,

Denis

try using 5W30 if you're not already, it does a better job getting up to the top of the valvetrain than 10W30.

I have a '97 Duratec and I noticed that when a shop put in 10W30 oil, it immediately made a ticking noise. They figured it was the "universal" oil. NOT TRUE. Under your hood it says 5w30 oil. Do that and only that. Fords are very particular when it comes to what type of oil you use. That is why it is labeled as such on the car. I have 149,000+ miles on the engine and knock on wood, never had a problem with the engine other than that one oil mishap. As for the creaking front end, welcome to the club. The rubber cushion between the front coil springs and the strut mounts are worn or not seated properly. (works like cartilage between your upper and lower leg in the knee)

Hmmm... I had the front strut mount on the creaking side replaced. Still creaks. I used Mobil 1 5W/30. Factory recommends 5W-20. Interesting.

Most likely it is fuel injectors you are hearing. This is normal. Don't use 10w-30 oil. During the winter months it will harm your engine during startups.
