Drive or Overdrive?

This question has been the subject of debate among my friends. I was wondering if I could get your opinions. With an LS1 Z28 with the 4A transmission, which gear set would be optimal for the best quarter mile time/trap speed? Drive or overdrive? I know that drive operates at higher RPM's due to the lack of a fourth gear (which means more hp).... opinions please.

well on an all stock car, they say that it sould not matter but, every one that I have seen does better if put in drive. Personally I have to use overdrive. With the converter I got and the power I make, I run out of RPM's in 3rd gear about 40 ft from the line.

Exactly what Hypsi said. If you run out of RPM's, then you have to go into OD otherwise your better off in drive. I don't know the gearing of your car but your 3rd gear is 1:1 and my 4th gear is 1:1 so I'm thinking you would be better off ending up in Drive.

You should be fine in either. Your car shouldn't shift out of 4th gear by the time you hit the 1/4 mile mark unless your running some 4:10's or something. Keep in mind your gear ratio will not change internally whether you are in d or OD

it also depends on trans too. if you have b4c or 9c1 packages on the car trans is gonna hit overdrive no matter where pedal is at unless u downshift. otherwise it doesnt matter cuz if you have it floored its not gonna hit overdrive since it downshifts from it when pedal is like 7/8 the way down.

when I ran mine on the qt , I left it in od and it went through all gears up tot he very last before hitting my finish. but then again..that's with 335 Hp.

If you put it in drive or overdrive wouldn't matter unless you got mad mods. It still has to go through the first 3 gears.Od or D still starts in first then second then third and final gear. Try a test run , measure out about a straight QTM and run it with a friend just as a test run both ways. In D and in OD

in a race, with no mods to your A4. Keep it in Drive, stab it off a tach of about 2k or so.

I keep mine in OD. It seems to hold in gear a bit longer when in D.
