I'm going to need a new engine soon in my 96 maxima. My question is would an engine from a 2000 or 2001 fit in my 96 and would it require a lot of work? Also would the stock tranny on a 96 fit a 2000 or 2001 engine?

Yes, it will fit but will require some modification. You'd be better off taking a VQ30DE from a 4th gen and the intake mainfold from the VQ30DE-K. You'd gain most of the top-end power of the 5th gen which would make you more than a match for them. And I'd assume the 4th gen tranny would fit the 5th gen engine as it works the other way around.

Would the intake manifold from the VQ30DE-K require modification to a VQ30DE or is it a direct bolt on?

No, it is not a bolt on; it will require custom fabbed plates and rewiring.
