i got a pioneer cd player to replace the stock cassette player in my 99 tacoma, but the mounting kit that i got for my truck is just a flat plate and the stereo just slides back in the dash, is there any way to mount it with my factory brace with the little accessory pocket beneth it?

I did it on mine, my truck came with a cheapo single din factory radio I just took it out and slid a kenwood into the mounting bracket then bolted it to my dash, if you had a factory double din just go to your local stealership and buy a cuby, pocket or what ever you call it for your dash and the stereo/cuby mounting bracket, this will go right in to your old double din bolt holes.

Ok maybe I wan't very clear so let's try it this way, I understand that Your pioneer is a single din what I am stating is that it sounds as if your saying your truck came with a double din stereo, if that is the case then go to your local stealership (Toyota dealer) and buy a cuby, pocket or what ever you call it for your dash and the stereo/cuby mounting bracket You would then atach this bracket to your pioneer and cuby then this assembly would fit back into your dash and bolt into the same mounting pionts that Your old double din stock stereo was mounted, I did this to my last Toyota truck and it worked very well with the kenwood head unit bolting right into the stereo/cuby bracket no problem,

Yes it will work just as shredhead has explained. It is call ISO mounting. You actually bolt the stereo to the inside dash. Otherwise you would allow that little flimsy bracket to hold the head unit. Good luck!!!!
