Old People???

So I was talking to my friends dad the other day right. He's really awesome, but when he has an opinion about something, he's not afraid to speak his mind AT ALL. I told him about my intentions of buying a 240 (finally found one) and i told him that i was going to tune it and "supe it up." This is when he blew up at me. He said that it's dumb to invest so much money into a car when the only purpose of owning the car is to get you from one place to another. He then blew up at me b/c i'm in a life and death battle with the parental (bitch....) to get my license. (she says i have to wait till i'm 18) He said "It's like a horse and a cart....You don't buy the cart before you have a horse to drive it.

I already have it all figured out what i'm gonna do even if i can't get my license till i'm 18. I'm gonna keep it at my sister's place and work on it until i can drive it. (Which i intend on doing....license or not) And i make enough money at my uncle's machine shop to afford the modifications.

My question is this: As "more experienced" 240 owners or even just the owner of any car that you have tuned, do you take a lot of crap for the money invested and how do you respond if someone does blow up on you like that?

(I expressed to him that i just love cars and any way to make them faster, funner and more able is a dream.....)

when people tell me that its stupid i really dont listen cause ive heard it so many times but if i do respond i just say that making my car better and faster is something i like to do. i mean its many of our hobbies to drive and work on our cars. its just that we all have a expensive hobby. that sux u cant get ur license until ur 18

Yea the other day my dad told me that he thinks my car doesnt sound right and he thinks its not tunned up right, and how he said that i should take everything off that put on it and sell it part by part to get my money back then sell the car and then buy something else with maybe more power because im wasting my time with this car... haha i said dad LOL!! first of all my car sounds that was is because i have a fat exhaust leak...(wich i dont now, so its sounds awesome) also i told him that im not going to that what he suggested because ill be wasting my time and money on something i dont want. I bought my car for $4800 and what exactly is it that i can get for that price that has more power than a 240 or even more fun to drive than a 240... i say i cant get a better deal than that....

He told me alright lets make a bet... and he said ..i bet you i can beat you on my BMW....and if i beat you then you have to sell the car im all hmm .... i told him alright ill have to fix my exhaust leak then we can work something out... This is funny because that bemmer is a pile of crap!! not only does it have 205,000 on a 1.8L engine, and not also does it sound like its going to fall apart, buts its also a 1985 so its the slowest BMW you can possibly drive hahaha!! My dad is talking smack so im gonna have to put it down... so me and him will race soon and ill blow his doors off !!

Sometimes you either have to ignore things people tell you because they just dont understand, and sometimes like in my shoes you have to blow dads doors off :rolleyes:

PS im not gonna sell it even if i somehow lose by having a blown tire or a blown engine or something or miss gears from 1st to 4th or something haha... i dont care... its my baby!! and i love working on it... its something i enjoy not something i just throw my money at...

Let me know how the race goes. It should be pretty funny. My dad says the same thing. He thinks his 1996 Silverado can take my 1993 Civic. My Civic runs low 14's. I whoop his ass, but then he says, "my truck can tow more, and is more practical." Dads are funny.

As for the original post, we do have expensive hobbies, but it's something we love. Ask the guy how much he has invested in his family. I'm sure he loves his family, well we love cars, and 240's especially. We are willing to invest in the fun and life experiences we will have in cars and around cars. If this doesn't work say, "I could be spending my money on drugs like all the kids at high school. Would you rather me do that?" Hopefully that will shut any parent or old person up.

my dad likes to say, "let's take it down to the metal shop and sell it for it's metal, worth more", "we had 6liter v8's". funny thing is my brother builds nissans and brings them around and he still says the same thing no matter how much HP they put down. we have offered him rides or to drive ours and he says it's slow. love my dad and i have tons of respect for him, but he really just likes to give us crap i think. he actually backed me the one day. some guy asked why does he drive that junker. he replied not the best car, but he enjoys it. plus, he used to own a SS chevelle (my mom crashed it) and stingray corvette. so he relates, but loves to give us crap. /shrug.

Well he is used to a lot of Torque. Our car don't produce the low end torque your dad had in the Corvette and the Chevelle. Tell him to give you a quarter mile time that is fast. Then run that quarter mile time. My dad says that you aren't fast till you run 12's. So I got a ways to go for my Civic and 240, but my 64 Chevy will run much faster than 12's. He finally said my friend WRX was fast when he ran a 12.87 at Bakersfield.

he hasn't rode in a 240 yet. nor does he say what is fast or what isn't. my brother has been trying to convince him to ride in his. he has 95 240sx se swapped in a s15 sr20det has 3inch to 3 1/2inch exhaust blitz front mount and full stand alone. it is pretty beefy, but he would still say it is slow. i just think it is because his mind set is of the big displacement domestic cars. he build up cars when he was younger and such so he isn't dumb just i think set in his ways. if i could i'd buy him a new C6 corvette, but seeing how i am in college and just praying my ka holds up until i can get a new motor won't be for a while. :(

I'm in the same boat. Our dads are a lot alike. My dad still doesn't like imports and thinks domestic muscle cars are better. love both personally.

I have a 87 Firebird formula that has really damn close to 400hp (397hp, 425lbs torque) and i bought my firebird for 2 grand (good shape) and have only spend 2 grand to get it where it is (stock suspension) and i will own most partly tuned 240sx's handling wise...and in the quarter...now dont flame me becuase i love my new 240sx way more...but just saying there are cars that are fun to drive and are fast as hell for the price...just have to look around...put alittle money into anything and it can be a blast...but like is said, i like my sub 14sec 240..just had to add my 2 cents BTW my dad gives me shit about my 240 too...lol

my dad and grandpa are like that too, they like to insult "puny" japanese sports cars. see to them, a japanese sports car is Civic EX, or a integra gs. thats why i hate it when ignorant people diss japanese cars with inline 4's. once they saw F&F tohugh, they shut the fuck up though (finally a good use for that movie) kinda sad how a crappy movie swayed their opinion. my gramps used to have 2 roadrunners back in his day, funny thing is, he has an '83 280zx (think its '83....) but 3, yes 3 SUVs. now wheres the practicality in that? one of em is a Navigator too. i remember my dad once asked me something after he saw the riced out cavalier, he said "you think that'll last?" i said "what will?", he says "hooking up japanese cars" so like the smart ass i am i say "they've been doing that for decades.......fool" lol but now they have respect for our cars once i showed them some drift videos and a dvd that covered the Tokyo Auto Salon, muahaa

My dad is the total opposite, he keeps saying he'll buy a 240 before I do, even though he won't, but he loves the car so much, he used to have a 280Z, so maybe that's what fueling his Nissan love.

Quit being a whiny little kid and life will go much better for you. You don't sound mature enough for a quality car just yet anyway.

my dad, my dad yad yad yad.... put it this way, your dad wants the best for u (I hop!) and he thinks that speed, and youth don't mix. True, BUT that’s when u come in, if u show him that you are a mature person, he might change his mind.


I don't stay much at home (most of the time in school dormz ;) ) but when i got my 240, i didn't tell anyone, never the less, my dad that I’m about to put an illegal motor and sup the big Jezus out of my car.

I’m not encouraging lying and dishonesty, be reasonable...(that’s when grades and maturity kicks in) know how to drive, get a job, do well in school then get the 240. It’s a car that needs work. 240 are not great out of the box; they’re old and need work. Remember that!

I’m not trying to sound old and too conservative, but I think that you’re young and a money pit /project car is not so appropriate now.

My son probably has faster, more powerful cars than most forum members here, but he also has more maturity than most his age (20). He and I have done quite a bit together as father/son projects and I think THAT is the way to get dad on your side. Get HIM hooked on your car. Ask him to help you or to be a part of what you are doing. You might be suprised at how his interest changes and how he might get involved. Dad tend to be more helpful when THEY get to play too.

I am an old "American muscle" gear head. (I have a 55 Chevy in storage in the states) I would never have DREAMED of getting into Nissan or drifting, but I have been won over. It wasn't over-night. It took some time. We DO have an advantage here as there are 2 drift tracks within a 20 minute drive from our house and drifting IS HUGE here.

My dad is awesome....so is my friend's dad. My dad totally loves the fact that i wanna get a car and disobey my mom....my parents are seperated. I don't really think i'm too immature to get the car like some of you have said. I was just trying to make conversation and i figured i would probably get some negative feedback.....which is expected....some people just ARE that way. Although i may not have owned a 240 for Umpteen years and worked on it for the same I think that as long as you put your passion into something that isn't hurting anyone and that as long as it's not something that hurts you.(i.e. drugs, alcohol) I tell you though, I would much rather be saving up to buy my car then saving money to buy pot and booze (which woulda been me like 5 months ago.....) I love the cars, probably not as most of you, but it's still something i have a passion for and it will probably grow over time. Thanks for sharing.....it's been awesome hearing so many stories and knowing that others are in the same boat.
