sports mode lets the tranny wait until higher rpms to shift, when i have it on my car doesnt shift till red line when you floor it in all the gears, you should be able to hit 65 in second gear.
cant help you on the wiring.

the sports mode is on the 90-91 automatics and it is pretty much just an overdrive. like defender said it revs to higher rpms and i believe it drops your last gear. when it is off you have an extra gear and your rpms are lower. you get better gas milage when it is off. but better acceleration when its on

Before you bought your shift knob I would of looked around and got a shift knob with a overdrive button on it that way you didn't have to cut it and have to relocate it somewhere else. I have found a shift knob that I like for my 91 auto and it has a overdrive button.

it also allows the car to climb hills without shifting into overdrive once you hit 70 and let off the gas.

i don't know where the wires for the sport button come out, but you can get any type of switch at radio shack and wire it up.

yeah i had to do the same with my sport button...
except i connected my wires and taped em so that now my sport is ALWAYS on, shouldnt have it any other way IMO hehe
but you can basically go get any switch you want and hook it up, generally switches have 3 prongs on them [input, output, ground]
so you can attach the sport wires which ever way you want then ground the switch and viola you're styling....

Aight i got it hooked up all i did was went to autozone got a switch from them which had 3 prongs on it... Power, ACC, Ground. Then i took the wires there were only 2 a green one and a black one. The black one is the ground so you hook that up to the ground on the switch then you put the green one on the power and thats it i drilled a hole by my shifter and then put the switch through it and i was done. It works great and people ask me what the switch does :-) so if anybody else wants to do it thats how.
