Exhaust laws

so my friend has a 98 civic nicely modded and he got pulled over for tint the officer asked him to start up his car and then rev the engine. the cop then said that his exhaust was illegal. he has a catback system. can sumone please explain to me y exhaust would be illegal they mostly harass imports (hondas, mitsu, toyota) if they are illegal because they think they are too loud have they heard a semi downshift or how bout a harley please explain this. i jus dont get it

well pretty much its the Township u were in. each state has its own set of laws, its then up to the township ur in on how hard they come down on drivers. my twp. i live right next to a police station n there cool with it. yet my girlfriends twp. they pull u over for ur exhaust as soon as u enter the twp. but check ur states statutes n see wut it says about exhaust laws. some states require a decibel reader n they have it set at a certain decibel reading. but yea theres a lot of crooked cops out there that r out for teens n older drivers just cause they have hooked up cars, but thats part of having them.

I agree with the not liking fart mufflers, but not because I hate imports. I just dont like the way a stock 4-banger sounds, and I dont want it louder. That said, I dont really care that much. I love unmuffled V8s, so I cant be a hypocrite and say they should punish 4-bnagers but not V8s

i like both lol, but i dont think its right to bash otha peoples rides but i guess it comes wit the territory

here in michigan the police carry around mirrors on a long stick to check out your car's undercarriage and see what kind of exhaust you have and if you get caught you as the owner are responsible for a $250 fine and getting a stock exhaust.

Not hating. Im just saying that I hate cars that DONT go fast but are loud as heck. If its a nice powerful v8 engine it will sound more impressive than annoying. But if its a little economy car.....:rolleyes:
I know you were joking but I just wanted to clear it up.

Take it form an old fart (ha!) you'll get more grief from thr cops over a loud exhaust than any other piece of equipment. You CAN go fast with a quiet exhaust.
If the cops can't hear you, they are less likely to pull you over and ask you other questions about your car, like about the tint, the stolen stereo and the roaches all over the floor.

is four cylinder all u guys know about imports? what about the 4 cylinder EVO inline 4 and STI box engine they sound powerful n turns heads these days you know, what about the 6 cylinders like the new 350z n G35, dont tell me you dont love that note, as for v8, they sound nice, and better than all of those engine i mention, but what about v12 uh,?

aight well i like how they all sound every car is unique in its own way. its just the cops in this one township just like to pull teens over with hooked up cars, plain n simple.

you said they pulled him over for his tint, so how did they know he was a teen? Maybe his car is kind of obnoxious. I have seen some very nice hondas that impressed me, but I do hate the ricer types that have the stupid cherry bomb fart tubes, and bolt on 3 foot tall spoilers, and five color paint jobs... if your friends car qualifies for 2 out of those 3, I would pull him over and give him a ticket too. Its stupid that I can hear a honda going the speed limit from 100 yards away... just plain stupid.

yea but if the car is done right n looks good i dont see wuts so bad about that. i dont understand why people get so pissed at "rice rockets" yet u can here mustangs wit their flow masters 100 yards away as well

I'm guessing the bigger the city you live in (i.e more crime) the more lenient they are on pety laws like tint and exhaust. They are busy investigating murders robberies etc. Whereas a small like town, the cops have nothing else to do, so they'll get ya for just about anything....lol

i just got nailed in my civic with a loud exhuast pulling outta my driveway heading up to subway that is 1 block away I had to make my custom 3" downpipe when the guy came to tune my car the thing laid down 604whp 373tq so had to have a 3" exhaust and it dumps out pretyt much behind my seat i got a warning once. and the same cop just pulled me over gave me a ticket for $95 for it. But i don't know the laws in your guys's town but he just handed me a copy of the ticket and did not even make me sign it !!!! I have signed every ticket i have ever received i signed one for no front plate and a cracked winshield?? Anyone have a opinion on this about the no signing?

Thanks in advance I'm gonna try and fight it if possible so i can fix my exhaust so they quit messing with me!!

First off welcome to AF, but please don't bring 6 month old threads back to life. You could have just started a new thread.

Second, around me, I don't recall me or anybody I know ever having to sign a ticket...so I dunno about that

Third, you can probably get a fix-it ticket. Swap on a stock exhaust, drive it to the courthouse or wherever, show that it is back to stock, and they will charge you $30 for wasting their time...if that is too much effort, then simply pay the $95 (there's no points) and just chalk it up as a loss.

Fourth, you got pics of your 600WHP civic...? Some people tend to doubt claims like that unless you can prove it. Don't take offense, I'm simply saying...
