I* have a 96 Aurora that is having trouble starting. It starts everytime but only after some effort. It seems that the engine is flooded everytime and after starrting appears to burn off some gas through exhaust. I had someone tell me that it could be my coolant temperature sensor, could this be true? Any advice??

Do you have to crank it for more than a bout 2 seconds? Do you crank it mutiple times? Has it dies on you when idle? Does it tend to surge at random times?

Sound like the fuel pressure requlator to me.

Yeah, I usually have to crank it for about 3-5 seconds. Also, I forgot to mention that it does surge and it idles strange.

Had the same problem with my 96 replaced the FPR and that solved the problem now it starts first time cranked and smooth at idle. Make sure you get the small O ring seated properly otherwise you will have a major fuel leak.

same with my 97... got worse and worse, had no power on interstate... had to crank for maybe 10 secs to start it. i also replaced fuel pressure regulator (FPR) and now it runs like a beastie and starts up quick. i paid $60 for mine, at a caddy dealer, and replacement took all of... 30 seconds. i have heard of lots of other ppl having to change theirs... hell i know buick owners who went through them like crazy (not that our roras are buicks but both are GM's)... i'd suggest trying that. pull off your engine cover, and if you have had the fuel rail recall performed, you'll see a little cup brazed into the rail. pull the vacuum line off and sniff it. if you smell gasoline, thats a good indication you need to replace your FPR

Just had my FPR replaced and it fixed the problem you are having. The part and labor costed me $107 from my GM dealership. I was having to crank about 5 seconds to get it to get it started, but it would always start as long as I kept cranking. Hope this helps :)
