86 Ranger

My son has a 86 ranger 4wd with 2.9L motor.His truck is very hard to start when it is cold it seems like the motor is flooding (Whirls over then will fire and try to run but quit i tried pumping the gas-it is a fuel injected unit so not sure if it gives it a shot of gas when you do this-but this only seemed to make it worse.Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
