I've been driving my mom's Jeep here lately, and noticed that it get's bad gas mileage compared to most other cars. I get about 16 mpg on the highway with 65mph cruising. Is that about average, or is the engine messed up?

Hi friend,

Yup, that's about right. In my '96 (inline 6 with auto tranny) I get 15mpg on dirt roads with hills, up to 20mpg at around 50mph on pavement, then around 60+ it starts to suck the tank dry again. Your 16mpg at 65 does seem a little low, perhaps try the usual: plugs/wires/cap/rotor/fuel filter/air filter. Start with the air filter. Good luck!

that sounds normal for a XJ, I bought one new in 1991 and that is what I got, My 1993 172K 4 x 4 currently gets about the same. That what you get with a car shaped like a shoebox
