I have a 4cylinder 1986 fiero 2m4 with the isuzu 5 speed. I have heard that the 4.9 northstar will bolt up to my transmission without any modification. Does anybody know if this is true? If not, is there anybody that makes a kit for it to mount up to my tranny? I dont want my fiero to be an automatic but I really want to run a northstar in it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Your idea will work, but with Cadillac still being very different from the rest of the GM properties, you'll end up spending a TON of money on custom made parts. Unless you or your best of friends are fabricator/machinists with a complete shop and lots of spare time, you'll have to pay out of your ass to get what you need. Getting the engine electronics working will be expensive as well, not to mention nerve wracking beyond words.
Chevrolet small blocks are a bit easier, with kits available for a complete bolt in. You have a wide choice of both iron and aluminum blocks and heads. There are hundreds of fuel delivery choices ranging from 2 barrel carbs to sophisticated stand-alone EFI systems, all of which are mass produced and available through thousands of automotive performance retailers world wide.

The 4.9L is not the Northstar, the northstar is the 4.6L and the 4.6L has about 75 to 95 more horsepower depending on what Northstar you get it from. The Seville is 300 HP and the Deville is 275 HP.
Its not really as bad as some make it out to be, the wiring is a bit more but a service man. made that easier. I had a 93 N* so I just had the ECM chip reprogrammed. I did have to have mounts custom made but you have to do that with most swaps. There is no adpter plate needed to bolt it to the trans. however you will need a 5 speed Getrag, the 4 speed and Isuzu shift cable are going to hit the coolant housing.
I have things all setup for you as far as a flywheel and clutch set up goes from Spec clutches!
Go for it!!!

ok another question. I have a line on a Chevy 302 but i dont know much about it. I have been told that it is the same as a 305. Can anybody tell me whether or not this is a good motor for my fiero? I want something that revvs fast like the 327 but cant find one in my price range.

If your looking for a good rev. motor with higher RPM's the 302 is your motor, infact its better for that than the 327. If I remember right with the right rocker and cam you can easily push a 7000 red line. If not higher! The 302 came in some of the late 60's sportcars like the Camero. The Camero RS/SS I think. Then again I have been up for a long time so I am a bit sleepy. I do know that motor should be selling for alot more than a 327, they are alot harder to find. Be sure its a true 302 and not a 305 redone!

302's are really rare (assuming it's a Chevy 302 and not a confused guy with a Ford 302, trust me ... it happens) and usually worth a lot. Parts can be expensive, but if it needs a rebuild and you're getting a deal on it, you could easily resell the longblock core and make some money to buy a crate 327. Either the 302 or 327 would be a unique choice for a Fiero, and sure to turn heads on both the show lot and the drag strip.
