I guess it's sort of like the question, "Does the man make the car or the car make the man?" Before getting a red 1993 3000, I drove a 1989 baby blue Toyota Corolla station wagon! I think that's the biggest change in cars....ever! Now, when people see my car, their like, "that's your car?" And it feels good. Of course it does. BUT...it's materialistic and egotistical. I know I am, but the 3000 makes me feel better about myself. :loser: That's pathetic. You shouldn't need a car to make you feel more popular or just to fit in. You should be confident and feel good about yourself no matter what you wear, where you live, how much money you have, or what car you drive. We are so much more than shallow possessions. Some of us might say that we bought the 3S because it's a fun, fast car. Sure, but how many of us bought it to fill a void in our lives or to just make us look/feel better about ourselves? Come on, be honest. I have my hand raised. Can you honestly say you haven't noticed others like you a little more because of your car? Or maybe girls pay more attention to you because you have a sweet ride? So the next time you're cruisin' in your 3S because you're lucky enough to own one, don't look down on those without a cool car. It could've been me.
Sorry guys, just wanted to air my thoughts. Post up what you think.

I bought it purely because it was very much my style and I have liked it alot. I only have two real friends and they both could care less (girls ) so that wasn't realy it. I don't try to show it off much but its nice to have the occational double take of some guy when getting into my car. Also I bought it because I needed a car to get to work in and it was a deal that ended up paying for itself now that I have found a buyer. The times when it makes me the most happy to own this one of a kind car is nights like tonight when I go out for some OJ at stop and shop and end up taking the long way back with the windows down even though its freezing and its just me and the countryside curves.

well i love the car itself. i like the way it looks, and performs great. (ok, i have a base stealth so i just like the way it looks, but i'm pretending i have a vr4 right now... :p )
and yes, it is somewhat of a "status" thing. knowing that my car is "better" than most out there is nice too. i don't think that it affects how i look at myself, it's just nice to have a cool car.

yeah before i had the 3k i had a little tricked out civic.. had like 4-5 grand dumped into it so it would look "cool" ha... but ive wanted the 3K for about 5 years so i sold the civic.. with everyone telling me how dumb i was.. and got the car ive always wanted. even stock i love it way better. ( of course) . And im not worried about the ladies..i have a G/F. and before the civic... i was pulling girls in a Saturn SL2 4dr sedan haha. so if you NEED a cool car to have girls talk to you.. feel bad for ya. but i just love the car personally.. just my input..

i bought my 3000 becuase well straight up..... they're f'n hot... it dont matter who u put in one of them people stare and on top of that.. those little civics that i used to get my ass kicked by in my 91 galant with more dents and diferent colored panels than a car that had been threw a war ... well lets just say they stay far away from me.. and if they dont i put them far away from me... this was my dream car... i love the car and wouldn't trade it for anythin in the world... cept a vr4 but then again wouldn't all of us sl's.....and another thing.... if u own one of these and try and tell me that u dont take the long way to places or the way with the most people so u can drive by them and get stares then ur full of it....we own nice and beautiful cares... they deserve to be flaunted but just as kev said dont look down on people with lesser cars because it could've been me...

I saw the 91s when they came out (back in college) and new I wanted one after graduation. So, after graduating and working for a year, I bought my 94 VR4. Its still one of the prettiest cars I've ever seen. It had nothing to do with what other people would think. It was all about what I wanted on that purchase :icon16:

Thank you all for your input. However, after close review, Nick gets the award for the best answer! :smokin: You're response is so true and exactly what I was saying. Also, I certainly appreciate Talskinyguy's honesty. Why do people buy gorgeous, expensive sports cars? If you honestly didn't care about what anybody else thought, you'd buy a damn cheap ass car with good gas mileage. Kia, anyone? After all, you don't care about anyone else, remember? I think some people just don't want to accept the fact that they're materialistic or shallow so they either deny it or get defensive about it. Nobody likes to be called out on, but it's true. How many of us wear name brand clothes or live in the right part of town? It's all about image. But it shouldn't be.
JDridah brought up a good point. I act like I don't need my 3000 to get girls, but in reality, why do I want to drive everywhere with my friends and why do I take people for rides in it? Hmmm, it doesn't take a shrink to answer that question. I rely on my car to get me noticed and that's something of a character flaw that I need to work on. But until then, you can find me in my red sports car with the system up sportin the fall line of Abercrombie and Hollister, hair gelled, and tryin real hard to show off

Techinically Ive never used my car to get a girl. Hell it only saw 1500 miles this year. However when she doesnt know I have a nice car, and I pick her up in it for a date it makes getting into her pants a whole lot easyer. But then again, Im evil, so it all works out.

whatever...i guess i'm just not in the same boat as any of you. i most likely agree with Yogs. But still, i got my 3000 b/c of its mechanical prowess and potential. I didn't know much about the 3S's at the time, and so i decided on the 3000 having looked at the 300ZX and Supra. But i just liked the 3000's styling the best. Any V6 manual sports car would have worked, but i found a really good deal on a 3000 with less then 50K miles, so i jumped at it. Been happy ever since.
I got this car because i'm fascinated with mechanics and like to drive fast. Not to impress some girls. Heck, most girls don't even know anything about 3000GTs, nor do they care. I don't flaunt my car; i'm just very fortunate and thankful that i have one. but i DO drive it like a 3000 is supposed to be driven.
I have discovered the very TIMELY and PRICEY expenses of simply maintaining a sports car, so not many mods have gone on yet. But once she is in pristine mechanical condition, then the mods MIGHT go on; but most likely i'll want to get a VR4--no other car can beat twin turbos + AWD + AWS and be in the affordable price range of the 3000. But now realizing the huge amount of mod-potential for these cars, i would say that is now my decision for the 3000--just as Yogs said, what i can put into this car. And my motivation is pure fascination with mechanics and cars.

Well I seriously don't own it to impress others, like yogs said its just for me, it would be awsome if I could take it to a senic place where it was just us and the road. Its about the performace and look I like for me. Same goes for clothing, I have never worn what was fassionable at the time like abercrombie or whatever, I wear what looks good to me and what is comfortable above all else (well not entirely true, I felt I had to stop dressing "goth" because its quasi trendy now and I don't want to look like everyone else). Untill recently I had blue hair, not many people think thats "hot" or whatever, I did it because I thought having blue hair would be awsome... till it got annoying having to do it every month. Just because you have one to impress people doesnt mean thats the only reason people have fast cars. So there are at least two reasons to own a fast car, for ones self and for the approval of others.
Edit: I also identify with Linebacker.

I disagree. i could care less what people think about my car. the fact is, as Thourun said, i like it because it fits me. And also from the vast wealth of knowledge i have gained about this car, i think most other people don't know crap about the 3000. ya they might know its got a V6 and all, but that's probably about it. So that just reinforces why i could care less what others think, b/c to them the 3000 is just a 'cool-looking, fast car.' i have friends that have sports cars (350Z, vette, ...) that don't know crap about their own cars! ...let alone the 3000.
so my decision for the 3000 was based on styling...yes, but much more so mechanics, performance, reliability, longevity, price (very affordable)and my freakin love for sports cars (even those about which i can only dream-->Ferrari, Lambo, McLaren...).
so NO, i don't care what others think about my car. NO i don't care what they think about me in my car. No no no because their opinion of me doesn't have any sway upon my actions/decisions. granted, how my choices affect others does influence me to some extent (e.g. test pipe affect the Ozone/atmosphere, and thus affecting the quality of air for all people), but in a way in which my conscience has been informed, and NOT by the popular misinformed opinion.
[i don't mean to rant or implicate, my apologies if i came across like that. i just feel strongly about some issues.]

You know what, never mind. I'll just go about living my pathetic fucking life without ever questioning the deeper meaning about why we do the things we do. I'll retreat into oblivion that the sole reason I bought my car is because it's a V6 and "i'm into cars. it's my hobby." That won't mask the pain when you look yourself in the mirror and question just how shallow you really are. Have you become a slave to your posessions? Never confuse your net worth with your self worth.

"the things you own end up owning you"
I bought my car because it was powerful, looked awsome, and AWD. I knew it had lots of stuff I knew nothing about and that was cool. Everyone I knew said not to get it because they suck. When I finally got one, everyone shut the hell up. I didnt buy the car because Im "shallow". I do however use it to my advantage with shallow people.

time out, Kev. you assume too much. this IS a car forum, and i gave the reasons why i purchased my car. if you want to talk about "the deeper meaning about why we do the things we do," i'd be more than happy to converse. You might have thought that most, if not all, people on this forum are 'slaves to [their] posessions,' but that IS a lot to assume. I would say most people are here b/c they genuinely want to know more about their own car and help others who have questions. Talk to Igovert, he's a philosophy major, i'm sure he can tell you a lot about the deeper meaning of things. i enjoy delving into subjects laced with philsophy, religion, human nature and then comparing different lifestyles of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Atheism, Nihilism to figure out why we do the things we do. the age-old question continues to be brought up and discussed, but let us deliberate elsewhere (perhaps the PM, e-mail, or AIM).

I want a nice fast car cuz I love hitting the road, hauling ass and flying around corners, but a big part of it is what others will think or will they be jealous or whatever. I dont like that I think like that but its not all my fault, first day I drove to school in my new (first one) modded integra at the end of school like half the school stopped and stared as they walked by and all these hot girls are asking me about it, makes ya feel good. Id much rather be at the drag strip or th track with my car than shwoing it off though.
and I know most of you own 3k's but I linked into this thread from the main page and thought id give my .02

This thread stirkes me as funny. How do you connect owning a nice car to being shallow and having no self worth? I will agree that some people who own nice cars may be overly materialsitic and shallow but it is ludacris to think that the one causes the other. In some cases, one may be an effect of the other but that is not always the case. Yes, I own a very nice car and I openly agree with my friends when they say I can be "obsessive" about it but that one small facet of my personality by no means defines me or really tells people anything about me. Well I guess it could show people that I take care of the things and people that are important to me but that's about where it stops. I'll agree that I am a bit materialistic at times but I'm going to play the "that's how our society is" card. I want my family to have what they need and not have to worry. I'm not ashamed in the slightest of that and I don't think that makes my life at all pathetic or pointless. None of this means I don't question why people do things or think about the deeper meanings of life or about the point of my life or any of that.
I love my car and I don't care what anyone else thinks about it. I love getting compliments from stangers but I don't hope for or need them. As "obsessed" as I may be, it's still just a car. Personally, I find it extremely offensive that someone would make a statement that me owning a nice car and caring about it and all of that in any way makes me less of a person or makes me completely shallow. You can look at me and my car and see me but that doesn't mean you know me at all.

I haven't read this whole thread and no offense but its obvious whoever is saying "buying a 3S for it's looks makes you shallow" is ugly and can't get a woman. That's what it basically comes down to. I bought mine just for the looks: it's looks and the looks people give. Screw the speed, not saying I don't like speed because I do need it, but the only reason i'd buy a nice looking car is to get girls looking at me. If this were a world of guys, straight guys none of you queers out there, I wouldn't give a sh*t what my car looked like, as long as it was fast. And as soon as I get the girls looking at me, it's cake from there! :bananasmi And most girls don't care what kind of car you drive (although I like the ones that know their cars) b/c they don't know a thing about them, and when they see a car like the 3S they're like whats that? is that brand new? and then I say yep '05 model :) lol j/k.

3000gt's have kind of developed into a cult car, a lot of people really like them but not too many have them. The only REAL attention I've gotten for the car is usually from asian girls as they seem to favor the 3000gt more and generally care about imports a little more. Most girls around here don't really care about the car you drive though as most of the time its how you look, how you smell and unfortunately, what you're wearing.
I think buying a car because you like the looks is a tasteful decision, its not like everyone here is a middle-aged man who is going through mid life crisis and wants a sporty looking car. If we wanted to drive a 3000gt or stealth as opposed to a honda, buick, ford or any other vehicle then we shouldn't be criticized as shallow but praised as tasteful human beings. :)

Guys, let's keep this to a meaningful conversation or let the thread die.
I'm glad we all have 3Ss and love the cars, but don't bash the reason others got them. Let's not get personal with this...
If you got the car because you thought it looked hot...good for you
If you got it to go 180mph...good for you
and if you got it to get chicks...good for you (hope it's working haha).
Regardless of why you got it...let's keep it civil and not make assumptions on why others bought theirs. Thanks

Linebacker and I talked about it last night on AIM, basically what I got out of our conversation was that it might be better to just have people who want to talk tals over AIM withought a chat room. One might work but I'm afraid it would not be used since there would be a lack of people always in there. Also neither of us knew how to set up a linkable chat room like on 3SI (obviously it would have to be a text link imbeded in a post).

We could just set up a chatroom over aim and invite and tell everyone what the address is.
OR we could go to the 3si.org chatroom they have on aim and I believe there is a link to that on the forums.
A more extreme method is to have one of us who is skilled at working with websites create some sort of java chatroom but I think AIM is probably the best choice.
oh and good moderation there.

IRC is a good option, I think you can use any client to coneect and you type in the name of the room and if anyone else types in the same name they are in the room too. At least I hope thats how it works, no need for setting up a room. Idealy if we are to have chat I would like to see a link that takes you directally to it.

There was a thread in the street racing forum a month of so back about setting up a chatroom...might want to check it out if you were interested...I don't know what their finally decision was.
