upgrades?

I need a way to increase horsepower without increasing torque. I don't have enough money for a higher torque capacity transmission and all of the performance upgrades increase torque and horsepower. If I put these upgrades on my torque could ruin my transmission.

not true... the torque 'rating' on your transmission is actually lower than it can really handle. i'm running a world-class t-5 with my current mods and have no problems whatsoever. the WC t-5 doesn't have that much better torque capacity than a standard one.
what you have to understand is that horsepower is a function of torque and RPM. the formula is: Horsepower = (torque x RPM) / 5252 . whenever one increases, the other will increase proportionally. so really, horsepower is just a term used to sell cars to ignorant people. the force an engine generates is called torque, from which horsepower is derived.

and btw in case you didn't know, the definition of 'torque' is simply twisting force

I asked this because I read in a book that in a 1996 cobra with a t-4 the syncronizers get destroyed and fork gets get bent when you use the mustangs full power. I found this strange because the t-4 is rated at 320 and 96 cobra has 300 ft lb torque.

the t-4 is rated at 320
Really? My understanding is that it was only 220.

Also understand that those torque ratings are found under an ideal effieciency your car will never see. You need to be making more than the lab tested max torque rating to equal the same as the lab tested torque due to the ineffieciency of torque transfer your car exhibits. How much more depends on a truckload of variables.

Does anybody know if a t-5 can handle 350 ft. lb. of torque.

Try www.ddperformance.com for some transmission ideas. The T-5s' they sell have a 330 lb-ft torque rating so considering your not going to beat on the everyday, the T-5 should be fine with the 350 lb-ft.

How about 360 ft. lb. And what do you mean by your not going to beat on the everyday.

Meaning your not going to beat on the transmission everyday. If your smoking your tires and peeling out everyday, you put your transmission under a lot of stress so you get less durability out of it. Moderate your driving. If you keep uping your lb-ft torque than you mine as well get a TKO 500 or T-56. Are you really planning on 360 lb-ft or are you just throwing the idea around? What kind or stang are we working with here a 4.6, 5.0 or a v6

your not being very cooperative her man lol {not trying to be an ass but give us some info} you dont have the car yet right? ok so once you have the carwhat do you think your budget is going to be for mods including the aproxamate 2k for this transmision assuming you install it yourself. how are you going to make this 350 or 300 {whatever you said} are you going to have it on slicks, drag radials, or street tires? this is all a big help. need to know if itll have a kenne bell on slicks with a shit load of low end torque or a bottle feed car with not alot of launching force.

i will just say this... ive seen guys w/ a stock t-5 that have h/c/i and are puttin out 400+ horses. it all depends on how you drive it.

What does H/C/I meen? I am going to have about 3500 dollars after I pay for the car. I want to get an cat-back exhaust, cervinis ram air hood and kit, and maybe a chip.I don't know if I'll have enough money left to get rims and tires. I just wanted to know if the transmission could handle the torque my mustang will have after these mods or if I'll have to use my wheel and tire money to buy a t-56. I just want to get a mustang as my first car so I can compete with those guys at my high school that have jaguars and camaros and of course hondas.

h/c/i stands to heads, cam, and intake. if you do these upgrades and run slicks you'll break a stock t-5.
if all you're doing is a cat-back and a chip, keep your t-5. no way you'll break it with a couple bolt-ons unless you beat the hell out of it.

i think you are way overrating the power those bolt-ons are gonna get you. simple bolt-ons will not push your tranny over the edge w/ what it can handle, as long as you don't do anything stupid...
until you start looking into a stroker, forced induction, laughing gas, or a chevy engine (had to put that in lol) you won't really have to worry about busting your tranny. you can be cautious about mods, but don't be overly cautious you may take the fun out of it
