which turbo v8 setup to go with?

alright guys i have a choice of going with a stroked 302 ford small block; 347 or a chevy 350. which do you guys think would be better for turbocharging? either engine will be built to handle around 10 psi, turbo cam, around 200 cc aluminum heads, the works. i am taking my time on this project and everything will be built right. the set up will be carbed though which most turbo guys will hate. i only want one boost setting so it should be done once i get the air/fuel dialed in. I am not going for multi stage boost or a hi/lo controller so i believe the carb will be the most cost effective set up for me. just really wondering what my fellow AF guys would recomend for the block?

ford 351 cleveland, has the best smallblock heads available. aftermarket or stock.

I'd have to agree, and add the 429 SCJ.
With the 351C if you raise the exhaust ports you'll gain about 75HP without doing any other thing to the engine. I used a 351C to set the world record on the Salt Flats. Don't even know if it still stands.

I agree, if you can fit the 429/460 in your application(what is it?), by all means do that. It can handle much more power and require less boost to get there, has basically enlarged 351c 2v heads. Plus they're cheaper(more common) and parts are easier to find.

It is going in a 85 rx7. whatever i put in will have to bolt up tp 302 motor mounts or chevy 350 mounts.

351c then. It'll bolt to 302 motor mounts and a 302 bellhousing. Depending on what trans you are going to use, it may need a different flywheel/flexplate. Nothing that you can't get easy though.

I am probaly going to go with a AOD. i need the overdrive to get the top end i want. i was wondering about block strength. how much power can these handle 351 clevlands handle? i have read alot on the 302's and the turbo guys at turbomustangs are cracking blocks left and right it seems like!

You'll never blow a Cleveland unless you do something real stupid. I use to run one and turned it in excess of 10,000RPM. And the good part is if you get a 4V engine you get the best heads money can buy, they really breath and love big carbs and reving. With a good roller cam, a tunnel ram with a 1050 dom. on top, good exhaust and some decent pistons and Hi-volum oil pump you'd have a screamer.

I'll do some more looking into this tomorrow then. zgringo always on time with some good advice. i think you may have just made me a ford guy for a while. :) are these engines any taller than the 302's? or wider? space with me is a big issue because of the car i am putting it in i want it to keep a almost stock exterior. I almost want to build two of these cars. one with a 5 speed. fuel injection, 5.0, full interior for daily driving, and another boosted 351c , built AOD. and stripped for a dragstrip delight. life is good!

The only problem with 351c's is they're a thinwall casting, like practically any motor since the mid 60's. Fill it within 1.5" of the deck with Hard Blok and run a stud girdle and you should be good to upwards of 800hp. The 351c is considerably wider than the 302w/351w. You will need a few more inches between the shock towers. Its not much longer or taller, however. Unfortunately width is the most common restraint. It will fit between the shock towers of a early mustang (65-66) and a Maverick, these are about as tight as a cleveland will fit into.

i was talking to a friend about this the other day. never really have understood the hardblok theory. this is where you fill up you water jackets right? i would think this would kill your cooling system. is this for drag only cars?

The heads are by far the most important part of the cooling system, not the block. If you have an oil cooler, the oil will provide enough cooling for the block. The reasons to leave 1-2" unfilled is to allow coolant to circulate through the head as was intended, plus the top of the cylinder is going to see the most heat for the longest ammount of time... the further down the bore you travel, the less time the cylinder wall sees the flame, and the cooler the flame is. I know several people running blocks filled like this. Think about it - the cleveland has a 3.5" stroke, and water jackets that extend 5.5" below the deck... 2 inches beyond what the flame will ever reach. Even if you just fill it 2 inches, 3.5" of unsupported cylinder wall is much more stable than 5.5" at very little loss, if any, of cooling capacity. I'll probably fill mine to 1.75" below the deck and run a reverse cooling system, through the heads first, then whats left of the block.

No its not for drag only cars. Mine will be 95% street. As long as you have a good radiator and a good oil cooler, you should be fine.

Stroked 302. Dart aluminum block, Kryptonite crank, forged rods/pistons. AFR 205s, your fav intake (Holley systemax is nice) FTI turbo cam. Then hold on :D

this is a little off topic but do you still have the rotory, does it still run, and are you trying to get rid of it? feel free to pm me.

rear mount turbo (STS) is the best way for v8's.

Thats some terrible advice, and the exact opposite of the truth.

If you are going to run a turbo on a carbed engine, I suggest you check out this site:http://www.boostedhorsepower.com/Blowthru/Forums/index.php.

hey man i'v actually got a 79 chev 1/2 with a small block chevy twin turbo. runs 12 sec in the 1/4 mile. its very easy to do. i am pretty much the only guy that anyone has seen doo it by the sounds of it. i'v been having so much fun with it i figured y not share with you what i did. its basically a stock 350 i found 2 slightly used trubos from older 6.5 L gm deisel engines from there i mounted them on a flange from the inner fender well one on each side then made a box with 2 inlet ports out of aluminum that bolted on the carb. then just run tubing to the turbo from the carb. for the exhaust i had an older set of headman headers which are basically mount backwards and upside down modified them slightly and welded on a flange then bolts to the turbo. then run exhaust pipe down out of the turbo into ur mufflers. then use the oil outlet for ur oil pressure sending unit t the line one to each turbo and have a line that returns oil back to the oil pan. then i just have a cone type air filter on each turbo. i have had it built and it works amazing the other thing u don't wanna forget is dump valves to limit the amount of boost i'm running 6 lbs from each turbo is nice tame truck to drive on the streets and it still pulls hard and its only a minor adjustment if u want more boost. my engine has 85 000 kms on it and it still runs and performs as well as the day i got it running well good luck and hopefully u get it all figured out
