HELP!! My '92 caprice classic keeps stalling on me!
It revs up then back down like it's "gasping" 4 air, then dies on me! I've changed 1)oxygen sensor 2)coolant temp.sensor 3)E.G.R.valve 4)E.G.R. solenoid 5)thermostat 6)map-sensor 7)throttle position sensor 8)air control valve 9)fuel filter. and it keeps stalling on me!! I hear air from underneath the car. could it be the cat.converter? took it to the mechanic and they told me it wuz the distributer and fuel pump. Had it replaced and still it kept stalling!! I wuz out $200+dollars. I'm afraid 2 take it 2 the shop cause they might take me 4 a "ride" again! SOMEONE SAVE ME! I'VE BEEN HAVIN THIS PROB. SINCE LAST WINTER AND IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS! HELP ME KEEP MY SANITY!!!!!!!!!!!

Does it have TBI (kinda like a carb) or is it direct injected?

If its a '92, it should still have TBI. Didn't go to multi-port injection till LT1 in '94.

Chances are the throttle body is loose and letting in way too much air. My carb'd unit did the same thing you describe

Rather than the TBI unit being loose, which is close, it's probably the gasket between the TBI unit and the intake manifold. I bet the piece of the gasket that runs between the two bores is gone.

Yeah - that's what I meant to say.

The revving up and down could indicate a low fuel pressure as well in my experience.... Might want to check that as well.

HI, my 92 caprice just started doing the same thing today. I just got the car less than 5 days ago . I'm thinking it is the fuel pump, we have alot of those problems in our patrol car as well (crown victoria) the dealer usaully changes the fuel pump and it works for a while but we hav not been able to narrow it down yet.

Another thing is I change the cap, rotor , wires and spark plugs it helped somewhat but the problem was still there, but it help the rough idle.

Mine did the same thing a while back and it turned out to be the IAC valve, but you say that you've changed yours...

I would agree with the others, though and say it it's a vacuum leak somewhere. The base gasket of the TB, or maybe the air horn is warped or loose. Try tightening the the TB bolts, and check the intake bolts too. Or it could just be a really bad vacuum line somewhere.

I have a quirk with the gear selector on my '91... It is very loose (understandable with 300,000 on it) and has trouble staying at the top of park. Sometimes it'll surge while idling if the selector isn't all the way up. As soon as I push up on the selector, it'll even out and idle smoothly. I'm going to be changing out the column with the one from my parts car, so it's not that big of a concern for me. But that could be another possibility (chances are that it's not though).
Just tossing some ideas at you, let us know what you find.

Has anyone checked the injectors?
