I have a '93 f150 4x4 with man. hublocks. Replacing the rotors sent me to mechanics friends for advice, as the haynes manual does not cover the task. A lot of professionals have misled me, from torching the rotors to using sledge hammers, mysterious three bolts behind the rotor and such. The following is a procedure that is used on the abovementioned vehicle with u-joint front axle. The 93 was a split year with live axle and cv joints, or u-joint independent suspension.
1. Remove wheel, remove brake caliper by tapping the sliding retainers with a correct size flathead screwdriver. Secure caliper with a coathanger, don't let it dangle by brake hose. Spray the lugnut bolts and the joined hub and rotor assembly with "Rust eater" available at Autozone.
2. Remove six screws securing locking hub cover. remove cover.
3. Remove inner retaining circlip, and outer retainer spring.
4. Remove hublock mechanism.
5. Remove c-clip from axle. easy.
6. Remove inner axle nut, spacer and a second axle nut which secures the outer axle bearing. Here, if the axle nut is tightly assembled you will need a special socket to remove the axle nut.
7. Now, remove rotor and hub as one peace, carefuly as not to damage the inner bearing dust seal.
8. Place the rotor on a workbench or a secure flat piece of plywood with the torot side down(I used a tree stump.).Cover the inside of the hub so you don't get any rusty chips onto the bearings and bearing races.
9. With a hammer and a wood block knock the lug bolts down into the rotor. The should remove quite easily once the rust eater stars working.
10. Clean the new rotors with brake parts cleaner.
11. Apply neverseize to the surface of the hub where the new rotor and hub will mate. Replace lug bolts and use a hammer and a punch. Tap until the bolts are seated flat in their original position.
12. Clean all parts. Repack the bearings.Reinstall the hub/rotor assembly in the reverse manner. Install new brake pads.
Don't use torches, 20 lbs sledges and unscrewing the three or four bolts behind the rotor is absolutely unnecessary.
