cam

okay i want a cam for my 91 305 tbi, i need it to be streetable w/ a comfortable idle and preferably the complete kit, w/ valve stem seals, seats, chain, etc... I also need it to be a cam that dosent dramatically effect vaccum like ive heard some do. i would like the cam to be up to about 5200 or 5000 rpm, if possible. i dont know any thing about cam specs like lift, dur, sep, ext, etc, i dont even know what kinda cam i have in it stock for that matter (hydrolic, solid, mechanical??) i dont even know if theres a cam out there that will meet my needs or not but i want to go ahead and put one in once i buy my intake manifold thanx for the help.

you have a hydraulic roller camshaft in your engine. aftermarket roller camshafts are usually more expensive than flat tappet cams. for street i would recommend something with a 260* duration, anything bigger and you'll need a stall converter. you'll probly want something with about .420-.488 lift. that's about as much you'll want to go with stock heads. that combination should give you nice low end torque with peak power at about 4500 rpm.

to run 5000rpm or higher on a regular basis you really need a better bearings and a high volume oil pump. i dont know of any kits that come with valve seals, but you can get those at a parts store for about $20.

okay i was looking at the competition cams k-kit summit part #ccak122062 operating range 1200-5200 dur. 212* lift.440 and it comes w/ cam and lifters, valve springs, steel retainers, valve locks, valve stem seals, timing chain set,and assembly lube. i know i need valve stem seals anyway cause i smoke a lil on start up, and i assumed i needed the other stuff just to put the cam in since its got completly diff. specs than stock. do i not need all of this stuff?? and u say i need more than just this to run above 4500 rpm??? please help!!

sounds like a good kit as long as it's a roller camshaft. you dont need new springs, but if you've got the time and the money then by all means go for it. the operating range is more or less an estimate of where you start building power, and where your peak power drops off. but that also depends on other engine components like heads and intake. you dont have to change anything else to be able to run above 5000 rpm, but to do it safely i would recommend a better oil pump and bearings. these engines just werent designed to run like that on a daily basis. if your luck is like mine, you'll take it up to 5000rpm one too many times and spin a bearing

yeah that would suck thats the last thing i need what about the cam that u can get to go along w/ the edelbrock performer intake for my year tbi, but it seems real mild to me do u think that one would do good or not
