i know this topic has probably been hit a couple times and im sorry for repeating. My 4WD is acting up. Just over a week ago it snowed by me. i used 4wd, since i live in a mountain. it worked fine. Today, i decided to sell my car. i was going to test everything out. Tried the 4wd, i hit the 4 hi button on the dash, nothing happened. i also tried the 4lo button, same story. i put it in neutral, and hit the 4hi button again, both the 4wd bottons flashed three times, and then the 2wd button lite up and stayed that way. any suggestions? i checked all the fuses by the drivers side door. all good. anything?

I had the exact same problem with my 1998. In an earlier post someone suggested to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to re set the computer. It worked! Good luck! It's certainly worth a try.

Are you hearing any clicking from the relays at all?

i hear a clicking from in the dash, only when the car is in neutral. that is the only time i hear anything. now when i put it in neutral and hit the 4HI, they blink but when i put it back in drive with it still blinking, it goes into 4lo. i will try dissconnecting the battery like stated. ill post reply soon. thanks

could be the 4x4 computer...that piggybacks on the main computer under the passanger dash.
a pain to get to...a pain to get back in.....but easy to replace when got to.
i had a similar prob....got one from a yard...did same thing as before.....
bit the bullet went to dealer got a new one...$245!
has been working for 2 weeks fine...
was told by dealer....the bad 4x4 comp is the reason for many strange shifting or no shifting problems.
especially when all vaccume lines and actuators are fine.
hope this helps....again just what i did..workd4m3:)

It's more than likely either the vac switch on the transfer case or the encoder motor. Your best bet is to get under the car and have someone hit your 4x4 button into high and see if you hear the encoder kicking over. If it is than mostlikely it's just the vac switch.

On the side of the transfer case, it has 3 hoses going to it.
