grand prix gtp problems

My husband has a 1997 gtp. Right now we know the supercharger is about to go. It sounds like my Dads 67 gto like it has a carburetor. This is going to cost us $2400. This car has 140,000 miles on it. But is also kind of cuts out on acceleration or when it is changing gears. It feels to me like the clutch is going out. But I know it does not have one. Could this be the transmission? I am to the point that I don't know if this car is worth fixing anymore. We have already replaced the fuel pump and had the electrical fixed for the heating issues on the pontiacs of these years.

First of all you can get a supercharger on Ebay for $500-$700.00.
Are we talking, the trans trouble are happening at high RPMs? What other mods do you have?

Automatic trannys do have clutches it just does the shifting for you. But, FWIW I just read in High Perfomance Pontiac that the clutch pack seems to go in these trannys.

If we were to try to change the supercharger and/or clutch package what kind of work are we looking at?

I don't have much time on these Ponchos yet, just purchased my first FWD GP about two weeks ago, But my thought is that changing the supercharger would be much easier than getting into taking out the tranny. The supercharger is at least on top of the engine and not under the car.

If it is the tranny check out, I believe, Intense Racing they specialize in 3.8 peformance and they have high performance trranys and differentials to suit your needs.

If you are hearing a rattling sound from the Supercharger you dont have to replace it.There is a Coupler in the nose of it that can be replaced and if you Click Here (http://www3.sympatico.ca/aepa/blowerinstall.html) there are instructions for replacing it.Also a site called ZZPerformance sells one better then the factory Eaton Coupler.Click Here for replacment coupler (http://www.zzperformance.com/zzp/products/eaton_sc_coupler.htm) and click here for GM supercharger oil (http://www.zzperformance.com/zzp/products/prod_supercharger_oil.htm) and you will need 2 bottles of GM supercharger oil when replacing the coupler.

Had the same troubles with mine when I was at high "R's". The new rockers fixed that.
I want to know if any mods were done to the car, or if it's stock. 140,000 aren't all that much for that motor. I'd say the supercharger oil is low. It's more then likely low on half the cars on this site.
But I would still like to know if anything has been done to the motor.

It has been to the pontiac dealership several times for check ups and they have never mentioned it. Even when we wanted them to check the supercharger did they say anything. Kind of annoying I think they just want it to blow up so they can fix it. I also think the supercharger and the tranny are two different problems. But the supercharger needs attention fast. The best I can tell you is follow Big-L advice. He has never been wrong yet. Start with oil change and then Coupler. Oil is the cheapest wat to go.

Its the Coupler and GM shops dont replace anything inside the supercharger,they just like to nail people in the butt for a new one.

If you look at the above picture you will see the old coupler on the left and notice how much larger the holes are at the 12,4 and 8 a clock position VS the new one on the right.That will cause a bad rattling or as some call it,a rock crushing sound because of the holes being larger over time with wear.

We changed the coupler and the oil. The s/c seems much better. Now we are going to look into the transmission and the wheel bearing.
