I have been thinking lately of picking up an older car ( Pre 1972 ) for a reasonable amount and then chip away at it as a drivable project to be finished in a couple years. I am not very mechanically inclined however I pick things up quickly, my knowledge of cars is very good however working on them has not been something I have done alot of. I was thinking of picking up a Camaro, Nova, or something along the lines of that for about $5,000-$6,000 and then work on it to make it a nice summer car, am I getting in over my head? I want to come out of this with a number 3 or number 2 car that I could drive and be proud of, it does not have to be a numbers matching car or have everything original but I would like it to be clean with a nice paint job to top it all off in the end, something that looks sweet, sounds sweet that I can take my time on... if this is something realistic for a 19 year old with a winter car then I would put all my heart and soul into it because I love these cars however am I just intimidating myself with this project and scaring myself out of doing it? I would just go through the car and see what needs to be done, then chip away at the issues one by one until it is set and ready to go, I'd like to spend $5,000 or $6,000 and over a couple years have it finished but any suggestion or help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm in about the same boat as you, young guy looking for an old car cheap. but you said you had a winter car which is good, but in so cal there isn't much winter  but i'm still going to make sure i have another mode of transportation that has good fuel economy because if I get an old muscle car running the way I want it is just going to inhale gas.
